The Renunciation of Kardama Muni
A Renúncia de Kardama Muni
- Text 1:
- Recalling the words of Lord Viṣṇu, the merciful sage Kardama replied as follows to Svāyambhuva Manu’s praiseworthy daughter, Devahūti, who was speaking words full of renunciation.
- VERSO 1:
- Recordando-se das palavras do Senhor Viṣṇu, o misericordioso sábio Kardama Muni respondeu da seguinte maneira à louvável filha de Svāyambhuva Manu, Devahūti, que estava falando palavras cheias de renúncia.
- Text 2:
- The sage said: Do not be disappointed with yourself, O princess. You are actually praiseworthy. The infallible Supreme Personality of Godhead will shortly enter your womb as your son.
- VERSO 2:
- O sábio disse: Não te desapontes contigo mesma, ó princesa. Na verdade, és digna de louvor. A infalível Suprema Personalidade de Deus em breve entrará em teu ventre como teu filho.
- Text 3:
- You have undertaken sacred vows. God will bless you. Hence you should worship the Lord with great faith, through sensory control, religious observances, austerities and gifts of your money in charity.
- VERSO 3:
- Tu te submeteste a votos sagrados. Deus te abençoará. Doravante, deves adorar o Senhor com grande fé, mediante o controle sensório, observâncias religiosas, austeridades e doações de teu dinheiro em caridade.
- Text 4:
- The Personality of Godhead, being worshiped by you, will spread my name and fame. He will vanquish the knot of your heart by becoming your son and teaching knowledge of Brahman.
- VERSO 4:
- A Personalidade de Deus, sendo adorada por ti, espalhará meu nome e fama. Ele destruirá o nó de teu coração, tornando-Se teu filho e ensinando-te o conhecimento de Brahman.
- Text 5:
- Śrī Maitreya said: Devahūti was fully faithful and respectful toward the direction of her husband, Kardama, who was one of the Prajāpatis, or generators of human beings in the universe. O great sage, she thus began to worship the master of the universe, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is situated in everyone’s heart.

- Śrī Maitreya disse: Devahūti era inteiramente fiel e respeitosa à orientação de seu esposo, Kardama, que era um dos Prajāpatis, ou geradores de seres humanos no universo. Ó grande sábio, ela então começou a adorar o senhor do universo, a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, que Se situa no coração de todos.
- Text 6:
- After many, many years, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Madhusūdana, the killer of the demon Madhu, having entered the semen of Kardama, appeared in Devahūti just as fire comes from wood in a sacrifice.
- VERSO 6:
- Após muitos e muitos anos, a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, Madhusūdana, o matador do demônio Madhu, tendo entrado no sêmen de Kardama, apareceu em Devahūti assim como o fogo surge da madeira num sacrifício.
- Text 7:
- At the time of His descent on earth, demigods in the form of raining clouds sounded musical instruments in the sky. The celestial musicians, the Gandharvas, sang the glories of the Lord, while celestial dancing girls known as Apsarās danced in joyful ecstasy.
- VERSO 7:
- No momento de Sua descida à Terra, os semideuses, sob a forma de nuvens de chuva, soaram instrumentos musicais no céu. Os músicos celestiais, os Gandharvas, cantaram as glórias do Senhor, enquanto dançarinas celestiais conhecidas como Apsarās dançaram em jubilante êxtase.
- Text 8:
- At the time of the Lord’s appearance, the demigods flying freely in the sky showered flowers. All the directions, all the waters and everyone’s mind became very satisfied.
- VERSO 8:
- Na ocasião do aparecimento do Senhor, os semideuses, voando livremente no céu, lançavam flores. Todas as direções, todas as águas e as mentes de todos ficaram muito satisfeitas.
- Text 9:
- Brahmā, the first-born living being, went along with Marīci and other sages to the place of Kardama’s hermitage, which was surrounded by the river Sarasvatī.

- Brahmā, o ser vivo primogênito, junto com Marīci e outros sábios, foi ao local do eremitério de Kardama, o qual era rodeado pelo rio Sarasvatī.
- Text 10:
- Maitreya continued: O killer of the enemy, the unborn Lord Brahmā, who is almost independent in acquiring knowledge, could understand that a portion of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in His quality of pure existence, had appeared in the womb of Devahūti just to explain the complete state of knowledge known as sāṅkhya-yoga.
- VERSO 10:
- Maitreya continuou: Ó matador do inimigo, o não-nascido senhor Brahmā, que é quase independente na aquisição de conhecimento, pôde entender que uma porção da Suprema Personalidade de Deus, sob Sua qualidade de existência pura, aparecera no ventre de Devahūti simplesmente para explicar o estado completo de conhecimento conhecido como sāṅkhya-yoga.

- After worshiping the Supreme Lord with gladdened senses and a pure heart for His intended activities as an incarnation, Brahmā spoke as follows to Kardama and Devahūti.

- Após adorar o Senhor Supremo com sentidos alegres e coração puro devido às atividades que Ele intencionava executar como uma encarnação, Brahmā falou o seguinte a Kardama Muni e Devahūti.
- Text 12:
- Lord Brahmā said: My dear son Kardama, since you have completely accepted my instructions without duplicity, showing them proper respect, you have worshiped me properly. Whatever instructions you took from me you have carried out, and thereby you have honored me.
- VERSO 12:
- O senhor Brahmā disse: Meu querido filho Kardama, uma vez que aceitaste completamente minhas instruções, sem duplicidade, mostrando-lhes o devido respeito, adoraste-me adequadamente. Todas as instruções que recebeste de mim tu as executaste, e, deste modo, me honraste.
- Text 13:
- Sons ought to render service to their father exactly to this extent. One should obey the command of his father or spiritual master with due deference, saying, “Yes, sir.”
- VERSO 13:
- Os filhos devem prestar serviço aos pais exatamente nesta medida. Deve-se obedecer à ordem do pai, ou do mestre espiritual, com o devido respeito, dizendo: “Sim, senhor”.
- Text 14:
- Lord Brahmā then praised Kardama Muni’s nine daughters, saying: All your thin-waisted daughters are certainly very chaste. I am sure they will increase this creation by their own descendants in various ways.

- O senhor Brahmā, então, louvou as nove filhas de Kardama Muni, dizendo: Todas as tuas filhas, que têm cintura fina, são decerto muito castas. Tenho certeza que elas aumentarão esta criação com seus próprios descendentes, de várias maneiras.

- Therefore, today please give away your daughters to the foremost of the sages, with due regard for the girls’ temperaments and likings, and thereby spread your fame all over the universe.

- Portanto, por favor, dá hoje tuas filhas ao principal entre os sábios, levando em consideração os temperamentos e gostos das moças, e, desse modo, espalha tua fama por todo o universo.
- Text 16:
- O Kardama, I know that the original Supreme Personality of Godhead has now appeared as an incarnation by His internal energy. He is the bestower of all that is desired by the living entities, and He has now assumed the body of Kapila Muni.

- Ó Kardama, sei que a original Suprema Personalidade de Deus acaba de aparecer como uma encarnação através de Sua energia interna. Ele é o outorgador de tudo o que as entidades vivas desejam, e agora Ele assumiu o corpo de Kapila Muni.

- By mystic yoga and the practical application of knowledge from the scriptures, Kapila Muni, who is characterized by His golden hair, His eyes just like lotus petals and His lotus feet, which bear the marks of lotus flowers, will uproot the deep-rooted desire for work in this material world.
- VERSO 17:
- Através do yoga místico e da aplicação prática do conhecimento das escrituras, Kapila Muni, que Se caracteriza por Seu cabelo dourado, Seus olhos tais quais pétalas de lótus, e Seus pés que trazem as marcas de flores de lótus, extirpará o desejo profundamente enraizado de trabalho neste mundo material.
- Text 18:
- Lord Brahmā then told Devahūti: My dear daughter of Manu, the same Supreme Personality of Godhead who killed the demon Kaiṭabha is now within your womb. He will cut off all the knots of your ignorance and doubt. Then He will travel all over the world.

- O senhor Brahmā, então, disse a Devahūti: Minha querida filha de Manu, a mesma Suprema Personalidade de Deus que matou o demônio Kaiṭabha encontra-Se agora dentro de teu ventre. Ele cortará todos os nós de tua ignorância e de tua dúvida. Em seguida, Ele viajará por todo o mundo.
- Text 19:
- Your son will be the head of all the perfected souls. He will be approved by the ācāryas expert in disseminating real knowledge, and among the people He will be celebrated by the name Kapila. As the son of Devahūti, He will increase your fame.

- Teu filho será o líder de todas as almas perfeitas. Ele será aprovado pelos ācāryas peritos em disseminar conhecimento verdadeiro e, entre as pessoas, será célebre pelo nome de Kapila. Como filho de Devahūti, Ele aumentará tua fama.

- Śrī Maitreya said: After thus speaking to Kardama Muni and his wife Devahūti, Lord Brahmā, the creator of the universe, who is also known as Haṁsa, went back to the highest of the three planetary systems on his swan carrier with the four Kumāras and Nārada.

- Śrī Maitreya disse: Após falar assim a Kardama Muni e à sua esposa Devahūti, o senhor Brahmā, o criador do universo, que também é conhecido como Haṁsa, voltou ao mais elevado dos três sistemas planetários, montado em seu cisne carregador, junto com os quatro Kumāras e Nārada.
- Text 21:
- O Vidura, after the departure of Brahmā, Kardama Muni, having been ordered by Brahmā, handed over his nine daughters, as instructed, to the nine great sages who created the population of the world.
- VERSO 21:
- Ó Vidura, após a partida de Brahmā, Kardama Muni, por ordem de Brahmā, deu a mão de suas nove filhas, conforme fora instruído, aos nove grandes sábios que criaram a população do mundo.
- Texts 22-23:
- Kardama Muni handed over his daughter Kalā to Marīci, and another daughter, Anasūyā, to Atri. He delivered Śraddhā to Aṅgirā, and Havirbhū to Pulastya. He delivered Gati to Pulaha, the chaste Kriyā to Kratu, Khyāti to Bhṛgu, and Arundhatī to Vasiṣṭha.
- VERSOS 22-23:
- Kardama Muni deu a mão de sua filha Kalā a Marīci, e de outra filha, Anasūyā, a Atri. Ele deu Śraddhā a Aṅgirā, e Havirbhū, a Pulastya. Deu Gati a Pulaha; a casta Kriyā, a Kratu; Khyāti, a Bhṛgu, e Arundhatī, a Vasiṣṭha.
- Text 24:
- He delivered Śānti to Atharvā. Because of Śānti, sacrificial ceremonies are well performed. Thus he got the foremost brāhmaṇas married, and he maintained them along with their wives.

- Ele deu Śānti a Atharvā. Por causa de Śānti, as cerimônias sacrificatórias são bem executadas. Assim, ele casou os principais brāhmaṇas e os manteve com suas esposas.
- Text 26:
- When Kardama Muni understood that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the chief of all the demigods, Viṣṇu, had descended, Kardama approached Him in a secluded place, offered obeisances and spoke as follows.
- VERSO 26:
- Ao compreender que a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, o líder de todos os semideuses, Viṣṇu, havia descido, Kardama Muni aproximou-se dEle em um lugar solitário, ofereceu-Lhe reverências e falou o seguinte.
- Text 27:
- Kardama Muni said: Oh, after a long time the demigods of this universe have become pleased with the suffering souls who are in material entanglement because of their own misdeeds.
- VERSO 27:
- Kardama Muni disse: Oh! Depois de tanto tempo, os semideuses deste universo ficaram satisfeitos com as almas sofredoras que estão no enredamento material por causa de suas próprias más ações!
- Text 28:
- After many births, mature yogīs, by complete trance in yoga, endeavor in secluded places to see the lotus feet of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- VERSO 28:
- Após muitos nascimentos, os yogīs maduros, em completo transe de yoga, esforçam-se em lugares reclusos para ver os pés de lótus da Suprema Personalidade de Deus.
- Text 29:
- Not considering the negligence of ordinary householders like us, that very same Supreme Personality of Godhead appears in our homes just to support His devotees.
- VERSO 29:
- Não considerando a negligência de chefes de família comuns como nós, essa mesma Suprema Personalidade de Deus aparece em nossos lares simplesmente para dar apoio a Seus devotos.
- Text 30:
- Kardama Muni said: You, my dear Lord, who are always increasing the honor of Your devotees, have descended in my home just to fulfill Your word and disseminate the process of real knowledge.
- VERSO 30:
- Kardama Muni disse: Tu, meu querido Senhor, que sempre promoves a honra de Teus devotos, desceste à minha casa simplesmente para cumprir com Tua palavra e disseminar o processo de verdadeiro conhecimento.
- Text 31:
- My dear Lord, although You have no material form, You have Your own innumerable forms. They truly are Your transcendental forms, which are pleasing to Your devotees.
- VERSO 31:
- Meu querido Senhor, embora não tenhas uma forma material, tens Tuas formas inumeráveis. Elas são realmente Tuas formas transcendentais, que são agradáveis a Teus devotos.
- Text 32:
- My dear Lord, Your lotus feet are the reservoir that always deserves to receive worshipful homage from all great sages eager to understand the Absolute Truth. You are full in opulence, renunciation, transcendental fame, knowledge, strength and beauty, and therefore I surrender myself unto Your lotus feet.
- VERSO 32:
- Meu querido Senhor, Teus pés de lótus são o reservatório que sempre merece receber homenagens adorativas de todos os grandes sábios ávidos por entender a Verdade Absoluta. És pleno de opulência, renúncia, fama transcendental, conhecimento, força e beleza, e, em virtude disso, eu me rendo a Teus pés de lótus.
- Text 33:
- I surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, descended in the form of Kapila, who is independently powerful and transcendental, who is the Supreme Person and the Lord of the sum total of matter and the element of time, who is the fully cognizant maintainer of all the universes under the three modes of material nature, and who absorbs the material manifestations after their dissolution.

- Rendo-me à Suprema Personalidade de Deus, que desceu sob a forma de Kapila, que é independentemente poderoso e transcendental, que é a Pessoa Suprema e o Senhor da totalidade da matéria e do elemento tempo, que é o plenamente consciente mantenedor de todos os universos sob os três modos da natureza material, e que absorve as manifestações materiais após a dissolução delas.

- Today I have something to ask from You, who are the Lord of all living entities. Since I have now been liberated by You from my debts to my father, and since all my desires are fulfilled, I wish to accept the order of an itinerant mendicant. Renouncing this family life, I wish to wander about, free from lamentation, thinking always of You in my heart.
- VERSO 34:
- Hoje tenho algo a pedir-Te, a Ti que és o Senhor de todas as entidades vivas. Como acabas de me liberar de minhas dívidas com meu pai, e como todos os meus desejos foram satisfeitos, desejo aceitar a ordem de pedinte itinerante. Renunciando esta vida familiar, desejo vagar, livre da lamentação, pensando sempre em Ti dentro de meu coração.
- Text 35:
- The Personality of Godhead Kapila said: Whatever I speak, whether directly or in the scriptures, is authoritative in all respects for the people of the world. O Muni, because I told you before that I would become your son, I have descended to fulfill this truth.
- VERSO 35:
- A Personalidade de Deus Kapila disse: Tudo o que Eu falo, quer diretamente, quer nas escrituras, é autorizado sob todos os aspectos para a população do mundo. Ó Muni, porque Eu te disse antes que Me tornaria teu filho, desci para cumprir esta promessa.
- Text 36:
- My appearance in this world is especially to explain the philosophy of Sāṅkhya, which is highly esteemed for self-realization by those desiring freedom from the entanglement of unnecessary material desires.
- VERSO 36:
- Meu aparecimento neste mundo destina-se especialmente a explicar a filosofia sāṅkhya, que é tida em alta estima por aqueles que, buscando a autorrealização, desejam libertar-se do enredamento de desnecessários desejos materiais.
- Text 37:
- This path of self-realization, which is difficult to understand, has now been lost in the course of time. Please know that I have assumed this body of Kapila to introduce and explain this philosophy to human society again.
- VERSO 37:
- Este caminho de autorrealização, que é difícil de se compreender, perdeu-se devido ao transcurso do tempo. Por favor, toma conhecimento de que assumi este corpo de Kapila para apresentar e explicar novamente esta filosofia à sociedade humana.
- Text 38:
- Now, being sanctioned by Me, go as you desire, surrendering all your activities to Me. Conquering insurmountable death, worship Me for eternal life.
- VERSO 38:
- Agora, com Meu consentimento, vai conforme teu desejo, entregando todas as tuas atividades a Mim. Conquistando a morte insuperável, adora-Me para a vida eterna.
- Text 39:
- In your own heart, through your intellect, you will always see Me, the supreme self-effulgent soul dwelling within the hearts of all living entities. Thus you will achieve the state of eternal life, free from all lamentation and fear.
- VERSO 39:
- Em teu próprio coração, através de teu intelecto, verás sempre a Mim, a suprema alma autorrefulgente que habita dentro dos corações de todas as entidades vivas. Assim, alcançarás o estado de vida eterna, livre de toda lamentação e medo.
- Text 40:
- I shall also describe this sublime knowledge, which is the door to spiritual life, to My mother, so that she also can attain perfection and self-realization, ending all reactions to fruitive activities. Thus she also will be freed from all material fear.
- VERSO 40:
- Também descreverei à Minha mãe este sublime conhecimento, que é a porta para a vida espiritual, para que ela também possa alcançar a perfeição e a autorrealização, pondo fim a todas as reações a atividades fruitivas. Assim, ela também se livrará de todo o temor material.
- Text 41:
- Śrī Maitreya said: Thus when Kardama Muni, the progenitor of human society, was spoken to in fullness by his son, Kapila, he circumambulated Him, and with a good, pacified mind he at once left for the forest.
- VERSO 41:
- Śrī Maitreya disse: Assim, quando Kapila, o filho de Kardama Muni, falou-lhe tudo o que tinha a dizer, Kardama, o progenitor da sociedade humana, circundou-O e, com espírito bondoso e pacífico, partiu imediatamente para a floresta.
- Text 42:
- The sage Kardama accepted silence as a vow in order to think of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and take shelter of Him exclusively. Without association, he traveled over the surface of the globe as a sannyāsī, devoid of any relationship with fire or shelter.
- VERSO 42:
- O sábio Kardama fez voto de silêncio para pensar na Suprema Personalidade de Deus e refugiar-se exclusivamente nEle. Sem companhia, ele viajou por toda a superfície do globo como sannyāsī, desprovido de qualquer relação com fogo ou abrigo.
- Text 43:
- He fixed his mind upon the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Parabrahman, who is beyond cause and effect, who manifests the three modes of material nature, who is beyond those three modes, and who is perceived only through unfailing devotional service.
- VERSO 43:
- Ele fixou a mente na Suprema Personalidade de Deus, Parabrahman, que está além de causa e efeito, que manifesta os três modos da natureza material, que está além desses três modos e que só é percebido através do serviço devocional infalível.
- Text 44:
- Thus he gradually became unaffected by the false ego of material identity and became free from material affection. Undisturbed, equal to everyone and without duality, he could indeed see himself also. His mind was turned inward and was perfectly calm, like an ocean unagitated by waves.

- Assim, aos poucos, o falso ego da identidade material deixou de afetá-lo e ele se livrou de toda a afeição material. Imperturbável, igual com todos e sem dualidade, ele realmente podia ver a si mesmo também. Sua mente introverteu-se e estava perfeitamente calma, como um oceano sem ondas.
- Text 45:
- He thus became liberated from conditioned life and became self-situated in transcendental devotional service to the Personality of Godhead, Vāsudeva, the omniscient Supersoul within everyone.
- VERSO 45:
- Deste modo, ele se liberou da vida condicionada e situou-se no eu em transcendental serviço devocional à Personalidade de Deus, Vāsudeva, a Superalma onisciente dentro de todos.
- Text 46:
- He began to see that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is seated in everyone’s heart, and that everyone is existing on Him, because He is the Supersoul of everyone.

- Ele começou a ver que a Suprema Personalidade de Deus está sentada no coração de todos, e que todos existem nEle, porque Ele é a Superalma de todos.
- Text 47:
- Freed from all hatred and desire, Kardama Muni, being equal to everyone because of discharging uncontaminated devotional service, ultimately attained the path back to Godhead.

- Livre de todo o ódio e desejo, Kardama Muni, sendo igual com todos por ter executado serviço devocional impoluto, finalmente alcançou o caminho de volta ao Supremo.
