hy ātmā gurur jñānam abhīṣṭa-siddhiḥ
tathāpi loko na bhavantam andha-dhīr
jānāti santaṁ hṛdi baddha-kāmaḥ

Translation
Meu Senhor, sois o benquerente e amigo supremo de todos, o mais querido amigo, o controlador, a Superalma, o instrutor supremo e o outorgador de conhecimento supremo e da concretização de todos os desejos. Porém, embora estejais dentro do coração, o tolo, devido aos desejos luxuriosos em seu coração, não pode entender-Vos.
My Lord, You are the supreme well-wishing friend of everyone, the dearmost friend, the controller, the Supersoul, the supreme instructor and the giver of supreme knowledge and the fulfillment of all desires. But although You are within the heart, the foolish, because of lusty desires in the heart, cannot understand You.

SIGNIFICADO—Nesta passagem, descreve-se a causa da tolice. Visto que está repleta de desejos materiais luxuriosos, a alma condicionada que vive neste mundo material não pode entender a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, embora o Senhor esteja situado no coração de todos (īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati). É devido a essa tolice que alguém não se qualifica para receber instruções do Senhor, embora o Senhor esteja disposto a instruir todos, tanto externa quanto internamente. O Senhor diz que dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ tam yena mām upayānti te. Em outras palavras, o Senhor pode dar instruções sobre o serviço devocional, através das quais é possível voltar ao lar, voltar ao Supremo. Infelizmente, entretanto, as pessoas não adotam o serviço devocional. Estando situado no coração de todos, o Senhor pode apresentar instruções completas sobre o processo pelo qual é possível voltar ao Supremo, mas, devido aos desejos luxuriosos, as pessoas ocupam-se em atividades materialistas e não prestam serviço ao Senhor. Portanto, essas pessoas ficam desprovidas das valiosas instruções do Senhor. Através da especulação mental, uma pessoa pode entender que não é o corpo, senão que é uma alma espiritual, mas, a menos que se ocupe em serviço devocional, jamais atingirá o verdadeiro propósito da vida. O verdadeiro propósito da vida é voltar ao lar, voltar ao Supremo, e viver com a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, divertir-se com a Suprema Personalidade de Deus, dançar com a Suprema Personalidade de Deus e comer com a Suprema Personalidade de Deus. Esses são os diversos estados de ānanda, felicidade espiritual acompanhada de variedade espiritual. Muito embora alguém possa chegar à plataforma de brahma-bhūta e, através de conhecimento especulativo, compreender sua identidade espiritual, não poderá desfrutar da vida espiritual caso não compreenda a Suprema Personalidade de Deus. Isso é demonstrado aqui mediante a palavra abhīṣṭa-siddhiḥ. Pode atingir a meta última da vida somente quem se ocupa no serviço devocional ao Senhor. Então, o Senhor lhe dará instruções adequadas sobre como voltar ao lar, como voltar ao Supremo.
Herein the reason for foolishness is described. Because the conditioned soul in this material world is full of materialistic lusty desires, he cannot understand the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although the Lord is situated in everyone’s heart (īśvaraḥ sarva-bhūtānāṁ hṛd-deśe ’rjuna tiṣṭhati). It is because of this foolishness that one cannot take instructions from the Lord, although the Lord is ready to instruct everyone both externally and internally. The Lord says, dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ tam yena mām upayānti te. In other words, the Lord can give instructions on devotional service by which one can return home, back to Godhead. Unfortunately, however, people do not take this devotional service. The Lord, being situated in everyone’s heart, can give one complete instructions on going back to Godhead, but because of lusty desires one engages himself in materialistic activities and does not render service to the Lord. Therefore one is bereft of the value of the Lord’s instructions. By mental speculation one can understand that one is not the body but a spirit soul, but unless one engages in devotional service, the real purpose of life is never fulfilled. The real purpose of life is to go back home, back to Godhead, and live with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, play with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, dance with the Supreme Personality of Godhead and eat with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. These are different items of ānanda, spiritual happiness in spiritual variegatedness. Even though one may come to the platform of brahma-bhūta. and understand his spiritual identity by speculative knowledge, one cannot enjoy spiritual life without understanding the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is indicated here by the word abhīṣṭa-siddhiḥ. One can fulfill the ultimate goal of life only by engaging in devotional service to the Lord. Then the Lord will give one proper instructions on how to go back home, back to Godhead.
