Swallowing the Forest Fire
Kṛṣṇa Engole o Incêndio da Floresta
This chapter describes how Lord Kṛṣṇa saved the cows and the cowherd boys from a great fire in the Muñjāraṇya forest.
Este capítulo descreve como o Senhor Kṛṣṇa salvou as vacas e os vaqueirinhos de um grande incêndio na floresta Muñjāraṇya.
One day the cowherd boys became absorbed in sporting and allowed the cows to wander into a dense forest. Suddenly a forest fire blazed up, and to escape its flames the cows took refuge in a grove of sharp canes. When the cowherd boys missed their animals, they went searching for them, following their hoofprints and the trail of blades of grass and other plants they had trampled or had broken with their teeth. Finally the boys found the cows and removed them from the cane forest, but by that time the forest fire had grown strong and was threatening both the boys and the cows. Thus the cowherd boys took shelter of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the master of all mystic power, who told them to close their eyes. They did so, and in a moment He had swallowed up the fierce forest fire and brought them all back to the Bhāṇḍīra tree mentioned in the last chapter. Seeing this wonderful display of mystic potency, the cowherd boys thought Kṛṣṇa must be a demigod, and they began to praise Him. Then they all returned home.
Certo dia, estando absortos na brincadeira, os vaqueirinhos deixaram as vacas adentrar uma densa floresta. De repente, irrompeu um incêndio na floresta, e, para escapar das chamas, as vacas se refugiaram em um bosque de bambus pontiagudos. Quando deram pela falta dos animais, os vaqueirinhos saíram a procurá-los, seguindo suas pegadas e a trilha de folhas de relva e outras plantas que eles, com os dentes, tinham pisado ou quebrado. Os meninos enfim encontraram as vacas e as retiraram do bambuzal, mas, nesse momento, o incêndio da floresta ficara forte demais e ameaçava os meninos e as vacas. Então, os vaqueirinhos se refugiaram em Śrī Kṛṣṇa, o mestre de todo o poder místico, que lhes disse que fechassem os olhos. Eles assim o fizeram, e, em um momento, o Senhor havia engolido o aterrador incêndio da floresta e levado todos de volta à árvore Bhāṇḍīra mencionada no último capítulo. Ao verem essa maravilhosa exibição de potência mística, os vaqueirinhos pensaram que Kṛṣṇa devia ser um semideus, e começaram a louvá-lO. Então, todos eles voltaram para casa.

- Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: While the cowherd boys were completely absorbed in playing, their cows wandered far away. They hungered for more grass, and with no one to watch them they entered a dense forest.

- Śukadeva Gosvāmī disse: Enquanto os vaqueirinhos estavam completamente absortos em brincar, suas vacas se desgarraram para longe. Famintas, elas desejavam mais capim e, sem ninguém para cuidar delas, entraram em uma densa floresta.

- Passing from one part of the great forest to another, the goats, cows and buffalo eventually entered an area overgrown with sharp canes. The heat of a nearby forest fire made them thirsty, and they cried out in distress.

- Passando de uma parte da grande floresta para outra, os bodes, vacas e búfalos acabaram entrando em uma área onde havia muitos bambus pontiagudos. O calor de um incêndio na floresta próxima deixou-os sedentos e eles começaram a berrar aflitos.

- Not seeing the cows before them, Kṛṣṇa, Rāma and Their cowherd friends suddenly felt repentant for having neglected them. The boys searched all around, but could not discover where they had gone.

- Não vendo as vacas nos arredores, Kṛṣṇa, Rāma e Seus amigos vaqueirinhos de repente sentiram-se arrependidos por terem-se descuidado delas. Os meninos procuraram por toda parte, mas não puderam descobrir para onde tinham ido.

- Then the boys began tracing out the cows’ path by noting their hoofprints and the blades of grass the cows had broken with their hooves and teeth. All the cowherd boys were in great anxiety because they had lost their source of livelihood.

- Então, os meninos começaram a rastrear a trilha das vacas observando suas pegadas e as folhas de capim que elas tinham quebrado com seus cascos e dentes. Todos os vaqueirinhos estavam em grande ansiedade porque haviam perdido seu meio de vida.

- Within the Muñjā forest the cowherd boys finally found their valuable cows, who had lost their way and were crying. Then the boys, thirsty and tired, herded the cows onto the path back home.

- Dentro da floresta Muñjā, os vaqueirinhos enfim encontraram suas valiosas vacas, que tinham se perdido e estavam a berrar. Então, os meninos, sedentos e cansados, conduziram as vacas ao caminho de volta para casa.
- Text 6:
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead called out to the animals in a voice that resounded like a rumbling cloud. Hearing the sound of their own names, the cows were overjoyed and called out to the Lord in reply.
- VERSO 6:
- Com uma voz que ressoava como uma nuvem trovejante, a Suprema Personalidade de Deus chamava os animais. Ouvindo o som de seus próprios nomes, as vacas eram tomadas de alegria e berravam em resposta ao Senhor.
- Text 7:
- Suddenly a great forest fire appeared on all sides, threatening to destroy all the forest creatures. Like a chariot driver, the wind swept the fire onward, and terrible sparks shot in all directions. Indeed, the great fire extended its tongues of flame toward all moving and nonmoving creatures.
- VERSO 7:
- De súbito, apareceu de todos os lados um grande incêndio na floresta, ameaçando destruir todas as criaturas silvestres. Como um quadrigário, o vento levava o fogo avante, e terríveis labaredas irrompiam em todas as direções. De fato, o grande incêndio estendia suas línguas flamejantes em direção a todas as criaturas móveis e inertes.

- As the cows and cowherd boys stared at the forest fire attacking them on all sides, they became fearful. The boys then approached Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma for shelter, just as those who are disturbed by fear of death approach the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The boys addressed Them as follows.
- VERSO 8:
- Quando as vacas e os vaqueirinhos, de olhos arregalados, olharam para o incêndio da floresta que os atacava de todos os lados, eles ficaram assustados. Os meninos, então, aproximaram-se de Kṛṣṇa e Balarāma em busca de abrigo, assim como aqueles perturbados pelo medo da morte aproximam-se da Suprema Personalidade de Deus. Os meninos dirigiram-Lhes as seguintes palavras.

- [The cowherd boys said:] O Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! Most powerful one! O Rāma! You whose prowess never fails! Please save Your devotees, who are about to be burned by this forest fire and have come to take shelter of You!
- VERSO 9:
- [Os vaqueirinhos disseram:] Ó Kṛṣṇa! Kṛṣṇa! Ó poderosíssimo! Ó Rāma! Tu cujo poder jamais fracassa! Por favor, salva Teus devotos que estão prestes a serem queimados por este incêndio na floresta e vieram refugiar-se em Ti!
- Text 10:
- Kṛṣṇa! Certainly Your own friends shouldn’t be destroyed. O knower of the nature of all things, we have accepted You as our Lord, and we are souls surrendered unto You!
- VERSO 10:
- Kṛṣṇa! Teus próprios amigos decerto não devem ser destruídos. Ó conhecedor da natureza de todas as coisas, nós Te aceitamos como nosso Senhor e somos almas rendidas a Ti!
- Text 11:
- Śukadeva Gosvāmī said: Hearing these pitiful words from His friends, the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa told them, “Just close your eyes and do not be afraid.”
- VERSO 11:
- Śukadeva Gosvāmī disse: Ouvindo essas palavras lastimosas de Seus amigos, o Supremo Senhor Kṛṣṇa lhes disse: “Apenas fechai os olhos e não temais.”
- Text 12:
- “All right,” the boys replied, and immediately closed their eyes. Then the Supreme Lord, the master of all mystic power, opened His mouth and swallowed the terrible fire, saving His friends from danger.
- VERSO 12:
- “Tudo bem”, responderam os meninos, e imediatamente fecharam os olhos. Então, o Senhor Supremo, o mestre de todo o poder místico, abriu a boca e engoliu o terrível fogo, salvando Seus amigos do perigo.
- Text 13:
- The cowherd boys opened their eyes and were amazed to find not only that they and the cows had been saved from the terrible fire but that they had all been brought back to the Bhāṇḍīra tree.
- VERSO 13:
- Os vaqueirinhos abriram os olhos e ficaram atônitos ao descobrir que eles e as vacas não só haviam se salvado do terrível incêndio, mas também tinham sido levados de volta à árvore Bhāṇḍīra.
- Text 14:
- When the cowherd boys saw that they had been saved from the forest fire by the Lord’s mystic power, which is manifested by His internal potency, they began to think that Kṛṣṇa must be a demigod.
- VERSO 14:
- Quando viram que tinham sido salvos do incêndio da floresta pelo poder místico do Senhor, o qual se manifesta mediante Sua potência interna, os vaqueirinhos começaram a pensar que Kṛṣṇa devia ser um semideus.
- Text 15:
- It was now late in the afternoon, and Lord Kṛṣṇa, accompanied by Balarāma, turned the cows back toward home. Playing His flute in a special way, Kṛṣṇa returned to the cowherd village in the company of His cowherd friends, who chanted His glories.

- Agora já chegara o fim da tarde, e o Senhor Kṛṣṇa, acompanhado por Balarāma, levou as vacas de volta para casa. Tocando Sua flauta de uma maneira especial, Kṛṣṇa regressou à vila pastoril em companhia de Seus amigos vaqueiros, que cantavam Suas glórias.

- The young gopīs took the greatest pleasure in seeing Govinda come home, since for them even a moment without His association seemed like a hundred ages.

- As jovens gopīs sentiram completo prazer ao verem Govinda [Kṛṣṇa] voltar para casa, dado que, para elas, até mesmo um momento sem Sua associação parecia uma centena de eras.
