Ремство Девахуті

Devahūti’s Lamentation

1:: Майтрея вів далі: Після від’їзду батьків, доброчесна Девахуті стала день у день з щирою любов’ю служити своєму чоловікові, розуміючи всі його бажання. Вона служила йому так само, як служить своєму чоловікові Бгавані, дружина Господа Шіви.

Text 1:: Maitreya continued: After the departure of her parents, the chaste woman Devahūti, who could understand the desires of her husband, served him constantly with great love, as Bhavānī, the wife of Lord Śiva, serves her husband.

2:: О Відуро, Девахуті служила чоловікові, як найближчий друг, але водночас виявляла до нього найглибшу повагу. Вона з любов’ю слугувала йому, тішачи його лагідною мовою і не даючи волі своїм чуттям.

Text 2:: O Vidura, Devahūti served her husband with intimacy and great respect, with control of the senses, with love and with sweet words.

3:: Повністю відкидаючи хіть, гординю, заздрість, гріх та марнолюбство і старанно та розсудливо працюючи, вона задовольнила свого надзвичайно могутнього чоловіка.

Text 3:: Working sanely and diligently, she pleased her very powerful husband, giving up all lust, pride, envy, greed, sinful activities and vanity.

4–5:: Дочка Ману, щиро віддана своєму чоловікові, вважала його могутнішим за провидіння і надіялася, що він проллє на неї дивовижні благословення. Через довге служіння йому і виконання релігійних обітниць, вона ослабла і змарніла. Помітивши її стан, Кардама, найбільший з небесних мудреців, пройнявся до неї співчуттям і звернувся до неї голосом, що переривався від ніжності.

Texts 4-5:: The daughter of Manu, who was fully devoted to her husband, looked upon him as greater even than providence. Thus she expected great blessings from him. Having served him for a long time, she grew weak and emaciated due to her religious observances. Seeing her condition, Kardama, the foremost of celestial sages, was overcome with compassion and spoke to her in a voice choked with great love.

6:: Кардама Муні сказав: О шанована дочко Сваямбгуви Ману, своєю великою відданістю і чудовим любовним служінням ти мене дуже задовольнила. Тіло дуже дороге втіленим істотам, і тому я вражений тим, як ти нехтувала власним тілом задля того, щоб догодити мені.

Text 6:: Kardama Muni said: O respectful daughter of Svāyambhuva Manu, today I am very much pleased with you for your great devotion and most excellent loving service. Since the body is so dear to embodied beings, I am astonished that you have neglected your own body to use it on my behalf.

7:: Кардама Муні вів далі: Присвятивши себе на релігійне життя аскези, медитації та свідомості Крішни, я здобув благословення Господа. Хоча сама ти ще не здобула таких дарів, які звільняють від страху й жалю, я сьогодні дарую тобі всі ці благословення за твоє служіння. Поглянь же, я даю тобі трансцендентне бачення, яке дасть тобі змогу оцінити велич цих дарів.

Text 7:: Kardama Muni continued: I have achieved the blessings of the Lord in discharging my own religious life of austerity, meditation and Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Although you have not yet experienced these achievements, which are free from fear and lamentation, I shall offer them all to you because you are engaged in my service. Now just look at them. I am giving you the transcendental vision to see how nice they are.

8:: Кардама Муні вів далі: Чого варті будь-які інші насолоди, окрім насолоди милістю Господа? Всі матеріальні досягнення обертаються в ніщо від одного поруху брів Господа Вішну, Верховного Бога-Особи. Text 8:: Kardama Muni continued: What is the use of enjoyments other than the Lord’s grace? All material achievements are subject to be annihilated simply by a movement of the eyebrows of Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. By your principles of devotion to your husband, you have achieved and can enjoy transcendental gifts very rarely obtained by persons proud of aristocracy and material possessions.

9:: Слова чоловіка, що досконало володів усіма аспектами трансцендентного знання, глибоко втішили цнотливу Девахуті. Її обличчя осяяв усміх, і вона, сором’язливо глянувши на Кардаму Муні, заговорила до нього, і її голос тремтів від глибокого почутя любові і смирення.

Text 9:: Upon hearing the speaking of her husband, who excelled in knowledge of all kinds of transcendental science, innocent Devahūti was very satisfied. Her smiling face shining with a slightly bashful glance, she spoke in a choked voice because of great humility and love.

10:: Шрі Девахуті сказала: Мій любий, о найліпший з брахманів, я знаю, що ти досягнув досконалості і володієш усіма нездоланними містичними силами, адже ти перебуваєш під опікою йоґамайі, трансцендентної природи. Але колись ти дав одну обіцянку, яку ти повинен виконати, з’єднавшись зі мною, тому що діти — це велике достоїнство доброчесної жінки, що має славетного чоловіка.

Text 10:: Śrī Devahūti said: My dear husband, O best of brāhmaṇas, I know that you have achieved perfection and are the master of all the infallible mystic powers because you are under the protection of yoga-māyā, the transcendental nature. But you once made a promise that our bodily union should now fulfill, since children are a great quality for a chaste woman who has a glorious husband.

11:: Девахуті вела далі: Любий володарю, мене мучить палке почуття до тебе. Тож, будь ласка, подумай, що треба зробити, згідно з писаннями, щоб моє виснажене тіло, змарніле від невдоволеної пристрасті, стало гідним тебе. Text 11:: Devahūti continued: My dear lord, I am struck by excited emotion for you. Therefore kindly make what arrangements must be made according to the scriptures so that my skinny body, emaciated through unsatisfied passion, may be rendered fit for you. Also, my lord, please think of a suitable house for this purpose.

12:: Майтрея вів далі: О Відуро, прагнучи вдовольнити свою кохану дружину, мудрець Кардама проявив свою містичну могутність і в одну мить створив повітряний палац, який міг літати згідно з його бажанням.

Text 12:: Maitreya continued: O Vidura, seeking to please his beloved wife, the sage Kardama exercised his yogic power and instantly produced an aerial mansion that could travel at his will.

13:: Це була дивовижна споруда, оздоблена всілякими самоцвітами, прикрашена колонами з коштовних каменів і здатна виконувати всі бажання. В ній були всі потрібні меблі і незліченні скарби, які з часом тільки примножувалися.

Text 13:: It was a wonderful structure, bedecked with all sorts of jewels, adorned with pillars of precious stones, and capable of yielding whatever one desired. It was equipped with every form of furniture and wealth, which tended to increase in the course of time.

14–15:: Замок був споряджений усім потрібним для життя і тішив своєю атмосферою за будь-якої пори року. Всі його стіни прикрашали барвисті прапори, стрічки та килими, а також ґірлянди з чудових квітів, навколо яких солодко дзижчали бджоли. Всюди красувалися льняні, шовкові та всілякі інші гобелени.

Texts 14-15:: The castle was fully equipped with all necessary paraphernalia, and it was pleasing in all seasons. It was decorated all around with flags, festoons and artistic work of variegated colors. It was further embellished with wreaths of charming flowers that attracted sweetly humming bees and with tapestries of linen, silk and various other fabrics.

16:: Палац мав дуже привабливий вигляд. На всіх його семи поверхах було багато ліжок, диванів, опахалів та подушок для сидіння.

Text 16:: The palace looked charming, with beds, couches, fans and seats, all separately arranged in seven stories.

17:: Палацу додавали краси чудові барельєфи на стінах. Підлога в ньому була викладена зі смарагдів, а помости зроблені з коралів.

Text 17:: Its beauty was enhanced by artistic engravings here and there on the walls. The floor was of emerald, with coral daises.

18:: Палац тішив око своїми кораловими порогами і дверима, обцяцькованими діамантами. Його сапфірові куполи були увінчані золотими шпилями.

Text 18:: The palace was very beautiful, with its coral thresholds at the entrances and its doors bedecked with diamonds. Gold pinnacles crowned its domes of sapphire.

19:: Діамантові мури замку були всіяні добірними рубінами, що здавалися його очима. Палац прикрашали чудові балдахіни й коштовні арки з золота.

Text 19:: With the choicest rubies set in its diamond walls, it appeared as though possessed of eyes. It was furnished with wonderful canopies and greatly valuable gates of gold.

20:: В палаці було багато живих лебедів та голубів, а також багато їхніх фігурок, які були так схожі на живих птахів, що справжні птахи раз у раз підлітали до них, вважаючи за своїх родичів. Отож у палаці постійно лунав пташиний спів.

Text 20:: Here and there in that palace were multitudes of live swans and pigeons, as well as artificial swans and pigeons so lifelike that the real swans rose above them again and again, thinking them live birds like themselves. Thus the palace vibrated with the sounds of these birds.

21:: Замок мав гральні майданчики, покої для відпочинку, спальні, внутрішні та зовнішні подвір’я, і все було дуже зручно розташоване. Побачивши це все, мудрець сам не міг надивуватися.

Text 21:: The castle had pleasure grounds, resting chambers, bedrooms and inner and outer yards designed with an eye to comfort. All this caused astonishment to the sage himself.

22:: Побачивши внутрішнє невдоволення, з яким Девахуті дивилася на велетенський, розкішний палац, Кардама Муні зрозумів її почуття, тому що перед ним було відкрите серце кожного. Отож він сам звернувся до неї.

Text 22:: When he saw Devahūti looking at the gigantic opulent palace with a displeased heart, Kardama Muni could understand her feelings because he could study the heart of anyone. Thus he personally addressed his wife as follows.

23:: Люба Девахуті, ти виглядаєш переляканою. Спочатку омийся в озері Бінду-саровара, яке створив Сам Господь Вішну і яке може виконати всі людські бажання, а тоді піднімись на цей повітряний корабель.

Text 23:: My dear Devahūti, you look very much afraid. First bathe in Lake Bindu-sarovara, created by Lord Viṣṇu Himself, which can grant all the desires of a human being, and then mount this airplane.

24:: Лотосоока Девахуті скорилася наказові чоловіка. В забрудненому одязі, зі скошланим волоссям, вона виглядала не дуже привабливо.

Text 24:: The lotus-eyed Devahūti accepted the order of her husband. Because of her dirty dress and the locks of matted hair on her head, she did not look very attractive.

25:: Тіло її покривав товстий шар бруду, а груди втратили свій природний колір, отож вона пірнула в озеро, наповнене святими водами Сарасваті.

Text 25:: Her body was coated with a thick layer of dirt, and her breasts were discolored. She dove, however, into the lake, which contained the sacred waters of the Sarasvatī.

26:: На дні озера вона побачила палац, а в ньому — тисячу дівчат, що всі були в розквіті юності і пахли, наче лотоси.

Text 26:: In a house inside the lake she saw one thousand girls, all in the prime of youth and fragrant like lotuses.

27:: Побачивши її, дівчата підхопилися і промовили зі складеними долонями: «Ми твої служниці. Вели нам, будь ласка, що для тебе зробити».

Text 27:: Seeing her, the damsels suddenly rose and said with folded hands, “We are your maidservants. Tell us what we can do for you.”

28:: Дівчата з великою повагою взяли Девахуті за руки, скупали її, намастивши дорогими маслами та мазями, а тоді вбрали її в нові й бездоганні шати з тонкої тканини.

Text 28:: The girls, being very respectful to Devahūti, brought her forth, and after bathing her with valuable oils and ointments, they gave her fine, new, spotless cloth to cover her body.

29:: Після того вони прикрасили її добірними коштовними самоцвітами, що виблискували яскравим світлом, а тоді нагодували її вишуканими стравами, які посідали всі найліпші властивості, і напоїли солодким п’янким трунком, що зветься асавам.

Text 29:: They then decorated her with very excellent and valuable jewels, which shone brightly. Next they offered her food containing all good qualities, and a sweet inebriating drink called āsavam.

30:: Після того вона подивилася на себе в дзеркало. Тіло її стало бездоганно чистим, а на її грудях красувалася ґірлянда. Вбраній в чисті шати і прикрашеній сприятливими знаками тілаки, їй шанобливо прислужували дівчата-служниці.

Text 30:: Then in a mirror she beheld her own reflection. Her body was completely freed from all dirt, and she was adorned with a garland. Dressed in unsullied robes and decorated with auspicious marks of tilaka, she was served very respectfully by the maids.

31:: Все її тіло й голова були старано омиті і прикрашені оздобами. На шиї в неї висіло намисто з медальйоном, а на зап’ястях і ногах дзвеніли браслети й золоті дзвіночки.

Text 31:: Her entire body, including her head, was completely bathed, and she was decorated all over with ornaments. She wore a special necklace with a locket. There were bangles on her wrists and tinkling anklets of gold about her ankles.

32:: Її стегна були оперезані золотим поясом, що був оздоблений численними самоцвітами, на грудях висіло коштовне перлове намисто, а тіло було змащене сприятливими мазями.

Text 32:: About her hips she wore a girdle of gold, set with numerous jewels, and she was further adorned with a precious pearl necklace and auspicious substances.

33:: Її обличчя сяяло, її зуби вражали довершеністю, а брови зачаровували. Її очі, кутики яких знадливо блищали вологою, затьмарювали своєю красою лотосові пуп’янки, а її обличчя обрамляли чорні кучері.

Text 33:: Her countenance shone, with beautiful teeth and charming eyebrows. Her eyes, distinguished by lovely moist corners, defeated the beauty of lotus buds. Her face was surrounded by dark curling tresses.

34:: Щойно вона подумала про свого коханого чоловіка — великого Кардаму Муні, найліпшого серед мудреців, як тої ж миті вона разом з усіма служницями постала перед ним.

Text 34:: When she thought of her great husband, the best of the sages, Kardama Muni, who was very dear to her, she, along with all the maidservants, at once appeared where he was.

35:: Коли вона побачила перед своїм чоловіком в оточенні тисячі служниць і усвідомила його йоґічну могутність, її огорнув подив.

Text 35:: She was amazed to find herself surrounded by a thousand maids in the presence of her husband and to witness his yogic power.

36–37:: Побачивши чисту й осяйну після омовіння Девахуті, мудрець ледве впізнав у ній свою дружину. До неї повернулася її царська врода. Вона була вбрана в вишукані шати, її звабливі груди були підперезані поясом, і тисяча дівчат-ґандгарвів чекала її наказів. О нищителю ворогів, ще більше зачарований нею, він завів її в летючий палац.

Texts 36-37:: The sage could see that Devahūti had washed herself clean and was shining forth as though no longer his former wife. She had regained her own original beauty as the daughter of a prince. Dressed in excellent robes, her charming breasts duly girded, she was waited upon by a thousand Gandharva girls. O destroyer of the enemy, his fondness for her grew, and he placed her on the aerial mansion.

38:: Хоча здавалося, що мудрець підпав під владу чарів своєї коханої дружини, якій прислужували дівчата-ґандгарви, насправді він не втратив своєї величі — самовладання. Кардама Муні разом зі своєю дружиною сяяв у своєму повітряному палаці, наче оточений зірками місяць у небі, від чарівних променів якого в озерах розпускаються лілії.

Text 38:: Though seemingly attached to his beloved consort while served by the Gandharva girls, the sage did not lose his glory, which was mastery over his self. In the aerial mansion, Kardama Muni with his consort shone as charmingly as the moon in the midst of the stars in the sky, which causes rows of lilies to open in ponds at night.

39:: У своєму повітряному палаці він мандрував долинами розваг навколо гори Меру. Від ніжного, прохолодного вітерця, який був напоєний дивовижними пахощами і будив пристрасть, ці долини ставали ще прекрасніші. В них зазвичай розважався товариством прекрасних жінок скарбничий півбогів, Кувера. Кардама Муні, що його уславлюють сіддги, також прилетів туди з дружиною й прекрасними дівчатами, і насолоджувався там протягом багатьох, багатьох років.

Text 39:: In that aerial mansion he traveled to the pleasure valleys of Mount Meru, which were rendered all the more beautiful by cool, gentle, fragrant breezes that stimulated passion. In these valleys, the treasurer of the gods, Kuvera, surrounded by beautiful women and praised by the Siddhas, generally enjoys pleasure. Kardama Muni also, surrounded by the beautiful damsels and his wife, went there and enjoyed for many, many years.

40:: Задоволений своєю дружиною, він насолоджувався в тому летючому палаці не лише на горі Меру, але і в садах Вайшрамбгака, Сурасана, Нандана, Пушпабгадрака і Чайтраратг’я, а також біля озера Манаса-саровара.

Text 40:: Satisfied by his wife, he enjoyed in that aerial mansion not only on Mount Meru but in different gardens known as Vaiśrambhaka, Surasana, Nandana, Puṣpabhadraka and Caitrarathya, and by the Mānasa-sarovara Lake.

41:: Так він мандрував різними планетами, немов вітер, що безперешкодно віє скрізь, де йому заманеться. Літаючи в своєму величному й осяйному палаці, який рухався згідно з його волею, він перевершив навіть півбогів.

Text 41:: He traveled in that way through the various planets, as the air passes uncontrolled in every direction. Coursing through the air in that great and splendid aerial mansion, which could fly at his will, he surpassed even the demigods.

42:: Хіба є щось таке, чого важко досягнути рішучим людям, які віддалися під захист лотосових стіп Верховного Бога-Особи? Стопи Господа дають початок священним річкам, як оце Ґанґа, що рятує від усіх небезпек життя в цьому світі.

Text 42:: What is difficult to achieve for determined men who have taken refuge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead’s lotus feet? His feet are the source of sacred rivers like the Ganges, which put an end to the dangers of mundane life.

43:: Показавши своїй дружині всю всесвітню сферу з усіма проявами буття в ній та з її численними чудесами, великий йоґ Кардама Муні повернувся до своєї відлюдницької хатини.

Text 43:: After showing his wife the globe of the universe and its different arrangements, full of many wonders, the great yogī Kardama Muni returned to his own hermitage.

44:: Повернувшись до своєї хатинки, він проявив себе в дев’яти окремих формах, щоб задовольнити Девахуті, дочку Ману, яка прагнула з’єднатися з ним. Так він насолоджувався з нею протягом багатьох, багатьох років, що промайнули, як одна мить.

Text 44:: After coming back to his hermitage, he divided himself into nine personalities just to give pleasure to Devahūti, the daughter of Manu, who was eager for sex life. In that way he enjoyed with her for many, many years, which passed just like a moment.

45:: Лежачи разом зі своїм красенем-чоловіком на ложі, яке збуджувало любовні бажання, Девахуті не помічала в тому повітряному палаці, як минає час.

Text 45:: In that aerial mansion, Devahūti, in the company of her handsome husband, situated on an excellent bed that increased sexual desires, could not realize how much time was passing.

46:: Поки подружжя, охоплене прагненням статевої втіхи, насолоджувалося за допомогою своїх містичних сил, сто осеней промайнуло, як одна мить.

Text 46:: While the couple, who eagerly longed for sexual pleasure, were thus enjoying themselves by virtue of mystic powers, a hundred autumns passed like a brief span of time.

47:: Могутній Кардама Муні знав серце всіх істот і міг виконати будь-які бажання. Знаючи суть духовної душі, він вважав Девахуті за половину свого тіла. Розділившись на дев’ять форм, він дев’ять разів запліднив лоно Девахуті своїм сім’ям.

Text 47:: The powerful Kardama Muni was the knower of everyone’s heart, and he could grant whatever one desired. Knowing the spiritual soul, he regarded her as half of his body. Dividing himself into nine forms, he impregnated Devahūti with nine discharges of semen.

48:: Того самого дня Девахуті народила дев’ять дівчаток, всі члени яких були наділені надзвичайною красою і які розливали навколо себе аромат червоних лотосів.

Text 48:: Immediately afterward, on the same day, Devahūti gave birth to nine female children, all charming in every limb and fragrant with the scent of the red lotus flower.

49:: Побачивши, що чоловік збирається покинути дім, вона силувано усміхнулася, але її стривожене серце стиснув розпач.

Text 49:: When she saw her husband about to leave home, she smiled externally, but at heart she was agitated and distressed.

50:: Девахуті стояла, малюючи на землі якісь візерунки ногою, на якій виблискували схожі на діаманти нігті. Похиливши голову й стримуючи сльози, вона повільно заговорила чарівливим голосом.

Text 50:: She stood and scratched the ground with her foot, which was radiant with the luster of her gemlike nails. Her head bent down, she spoke in slow yet charming accents, suppressing her tears.

51:: Шрі Девахуті сказала: Мій володарю, ти виконав усі обіцянки, які ти дав мені, але тобі годилося б дати мені також безстрашність, адже я — віддана тобі душа.

Text 51:: Śrī Devahūti said: My lord, you have fulfilled all the promises you gave me, yet because I am your surrendered soul, you should give me fearlessness too.

52:: Любий брахмано, що стосується до твоїх дочок, то вони знайдуть собі гідних чоловіків і кожна піде в дім свого чоловіка. Хто ж залишиться давати розраду мені після того, як ти станеш санн’ясі й підеш геть від мене?

Text 52:: My dear brāhmaṇa, as far as your daughters are concerned, they will find their own suitable husbands and go away to their respective homes. But who will give me solace after your departure as a sannyāsī?

53:: Досі ми просто марнували наш час за чуттєвими втіхами, не намагаючись здобути знання про Верховного Господа.

Text 53:: Until now we have simply wasted so much of our time in sense gratification, neglecting to cultivate knowledge of the Supreme Lord.

54:: Не знаючи твоєї трансцендентної величі, я кохала тебе, залишаючись прив’язаною до об’єктів чуттів. Однак нехай же ця прив’язаність, яку я розвинула, приведе мене до цілковитої свободи від страху.

Text 54:: Not knowing your transcendental situation, I have loved you while remaining attached to the objects of the senses. Nonetheless, let the affinity I have developed for you rid me of all fear.

55:: Спілкування, мета якого — задовольняти чуття, неодмінно призводить до рабства. Однак таке саме спілкування зі святою особистістю провадить до звільнення, навіть без свідомих зусиль самої людини.

Text 55:: Association for sense gratification is certainly the path of bondage. But the same type of association, performed with a saintly person, leads to the path of liberation, even if performed without knowledge.

56:: Якщо робота людини не має на меті розвитку релігійності, якщо релігійні відправи людини не розвивають у ній зреченості і якщо зреченість людини не веде її до відданого служіння Верховному Богові-Особі, таку людину, дарма що вона дихає, слід вважати за мерця.

Text 56:: Anyone whose work is not meant to elevate him to religious life, anyone whose religious ritualistic performances do not raise him to renunciation, and anyone situated in renunciation that does not lead him to devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, must be considered dead, although he is breathing.

57:: Мій володарю, мене обвела навколо пальця нездоланна ілюзорна енерґія Верховного Бога-Особи, тому що, навіть здобувши твоє товариство, що звільнює від матеріального рабства, я не прагнула цього звільнення.

Text 57:: My lord, surely I have been solidly cheated by the insurmountable illusory energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, for in spite of having obtained your association, which gives liberation from material bondage, I did not seek such liberation.
