kula-kṣaye praṇaśyanti
kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ
dharme naṣṭe kulaṁ kṛtsnam
adharmo ’bhibhavaty uta
kula-kṣaye praṇaśyanti

Translation

Com a destruição da dinastia, a tradição eterna da família extingue-se, e assim o resto da família se envolve em irreligião.

With the destruction of the dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.

Purport

No sistema da instituição varṇāśrama, há muitos princípios de tradições religiosas que servem para ajudar os membros da família a obter uma boa formação e a alcançar os valores espirituais. Os membros mais velhos são responsáveis por tais processos purificatórios na família, começando do nascimento e indo até a morte. Mas com a morte dos membros mais velhos, tais tradições familiares que visam à purificação podem cessar, e os restantes membros mais jovens da família podem desenvolver hábitos irreligiosos e então perder a oportunidade de sua salvação espiritual. Portanto, não há motivo algum que justifique a matança dos membros mais velhos da família.

In the system of the varṇāśrama institution there are many principles of religious traditions to help members of the family grow properly and attain spiritual values. The elder members are responsible for such purifying processes in the family, beginning from birth to death. But on the death of the elder members, such family traditions of purification may stop, and the remaining younger family members may develop irreligious habits and thereby lose their chance for spiritual salvation. Therefore, for no purpose should the elder members of the family be slain.
