kāmyānāṁ karmaṇāṁ nyāsaṁ
sannyāsaṁ kavayo viduḥ
sarva-karma-phala-tyāgaṁ
prāhus tyāgaṁ vicakṣaṇāḥ

Translation

De Allerhoogste Persoonlijkheid Gods zei: Het afstand doen van activiteiten die gebaseerd zijn op materiële verlangens, wordt door grote geleerden de onthechte levensorde [sannyāsa] genoemd. En afstand doen van de vruchten van alle activiteiten wordt door de wijzen onthechting [tyāga] genoemd.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: The giving up of activities that are based on material desire is what great learned men call the renounced order of life [sannyāsa]. And giving up the results of all activities is what the wise call renunciation [tyāga].

Activiteiten verrichten voor resultaten moet worden opgegeven. Dat is de instructie van de Bhagavad-gītā. Maar activiteiten die tot gevorderde spirituele kennis leiden, moeten niet opgegeven worden. Dit zal in de volgende verzen duidelijk worden gemaakt. In de Vedische literatuur worden veel methoden voorgeschreven voor het verrichten van offers om een bepaald doel te bereiken. Zo bestaan er bepaalde offers om een goede zoon te krijgen of om naar de hogere planeten te worden bevorderd. Maar offers die voortkomen uit verlangens moeten worden gestopt. Offers om het hart te zuiveren of om vooruitgang te maken in de spirituele wetenschap moeten daarentegen niet worden opgegeven.

The performance of activities for results has to be given up. This is the instruction of Bhagavad-gītā. But activities leading to advanced spiritual knowledge are not to be given up. This will be made clear in the next verses. In the Vedic literature there are many prescriptions of methods for performing sacrifice for some particular purpose. There are certain sacrifices to perform to attain a good son or to attain elevation to the higher planets, but sacrifices prompted by desires should be stopped. However, sacrifice for the purification of one’s heart or for advancement in the spiritual science should not be given up.
