yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya
vartate kāma-kārataḥ
na sa siddhim avāpnoti
na sukhaṁ na parāṁ gatim

Hij die de bepalingen van de geschriften verwerpt en vanuit zijn eigen verlangens handelt, wordt niet gelukkig en bereikt noch volmaaktheid, noch de allerhoogste bestemming.

He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination.

Zoals al eerder werd beschreven, worden śāstra-vidhi of de aanwijzingen van de śāstra aan verschillende kasten en orden van de menselijke samenleving gegeven en iedereen wordt geacht deze regels en bepalingen te volgen. Wie ze niet volgt en onder invloed van zijn lust, woede en hebzucht doet wat hij zelf wil, zal in zijn leven nooit volmaaktheid bereiken. Met andere woorden, men kan deze zaken misschien theoretisch wel begrijpen, maar als men ze niet in zijn eigen leven toepast, dan moet men worden gezien als de laagste onder de mensen. In de menselijke levensvorm wordt het levend wezen verondersteld verstandig te zijn en de gegeven regels te volgen, zodat het zijn leven op het hoogste niveau kan brengen; volgt het deze regels echter niet, dan verlaagt het zich. Maar ook al volgt het de regels en bepalingen en de morele principes, als het uiteindelijk de Allerhoogste Heer niet begrijpt, dan is al zijn kennis vergeefs. En zelfs als het levend wezen het bestaan van God aanvaardt, maar geen devotionele dienst aan de Heer verricht, dan blijven zijn inspanningen zonder succes. Men moet daarom geleidelijk aan tot het niveau van Kṛṣṇa-bewustzijn en devotionele dienst komen; alleen daardoor kan men het hoogste niveau van perfectie bereiken en op geen andere manier.

As described before, the śāstra-vidhi, or the direction of the śāstra, is given to the different castes and orders of human society. Everyone is expected to follow these rules and regulations. If one does not follow them and acts whimsically according to his lust, greed and desire, then he never will be perfect in his life. In other words, a man may theoretically know all these things, but if he does not apply them in his own life, then he is to be known as the lowest of mankind. In the human form of life, a living entity is expected to be sane and to follow the regulations given for elevating his life to the highest platform, but if he does not follow them, then he degrades himself. But even if he follows the rules and regulations and moral principles and ultimately does not come to the stage of understanding the Supreme Lord, then all his knowledge becomes spoiled. And even if he accepts the existence of God, if he does not engage himself in the service of the Lord his attempts are spoiled. Therefore one should gradually raise himself to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness and devotional service; it is then and there that he can attain the highest perfectional stage, not otherwise.

Het woord ‘kāma-kārataḥ’ is heel belangrijk. Wie willens en wetens de regels breekt, handelt uit lust. Hij weet dat iets verboden is, maar toch doet hij het. Zulk gedrag wordt eigenzinnig genoemd. Ook al weet hij dat iets gedaan moet worden, toch doet hij het niet; daarom wordt hij eigenzinnig genoemd. Zulke personen zijn gedoemd om door de Allerhoogste Heer te worden verworpen. Ze kunnen niet de perfectie bereiken waarvoor het menselijk leven is bedoeld. Het menselijk leven is speciaal bedoeld om het bestaan te zuiveren, maar wie de regels en bepalingen niet volgt, kan zichzelf niet zuiveren en kan evenmin werkelijk gelukkig worden.

The word kāma-kārataḥ is very significant. A person who knowingly violates the rules acts in lust. He knows that this is forbidden, but still he acts. This is called acting whimsically. He knows that this should be done, but still he does not do it; therefore he is called whimsical. Such persons are destined to be condemned by the Supreme Lord. Such persons cannot have the perfection which is meant for the human life. The human life is especially meant for purifying one’s existence, and one who does not follow the rules and regulations cannot purify himself, nor can he attain the real stage of happiness.
