Chapter Nine

가장 비밀스러운 지식

The Most Confidential Knowledge

제1절:
최고인격신께서 말씀하셨습니다: 나의 소중한 아르주나여, 너는 절대 나를 시기하지 않기에 가장 비밀스러운 이 지식과 깨달음을 네게 전하니, 이것을 앎으로써 물질적 존재의 고통에서 벗어날 것이다.
TEXT 1:
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, because you are never envious of Me, I shall impart to you this most confidential knowledge and realization, knowing which you shall be relieved of the miseries of material existence.
제2절:
이 지식은 교육의 왕이며 모든 비밀 중에서 최고의 비밀이다. 또한 가장 순수한 지식이고, 깨달음을 통해 자아에 관한 직접적 인식을 심어주기에 이것이 바로 종교의 완성이니라. 이 지식은 영원하며 즐겁게 성취된다.
TEXT 2:
This knowledge is the king of education, the most secret of all secrets. It is the purest knowledge, and because it gives direct perception of the self by realization, it is the perfection of religion. It is everlasting, and it is joyfully performed.
제3절:
이 봉헌에 믿음이 없는 자들은 나에게 이를 수 없다, 오 적을 없애는 자여. 따라서 그들은 이 물질계의 삶과 죽음의 길로 다시 돌아오느니라.
TEXT 3:
Those who are not faithful in this devotional service cannot attain Me, O conqueror of enemies. Therefore they return to the path of birth and death in this material world.
제4절:
나의 발현하지 않는 형상 안에, 나에 의해서 이 전체 우주가 존재하느니라. 모든 존재는 내 안에 있지만 나는 그들 안에 없다.
TEXT 4:
By Me, in My unmanifested form, this entire universe is pervaded. All beings are in Me, but I am not in them.
제5절:
그러나 창조된 모든 것이 내 안에 머물지 않는다. 신비한 나의 풍요로움을 보아라! 나는 모든 생명체의 유지자이며 모든 곳에 있지만, 나는 이 우주적 발현의 일부가 아니다. 그 까닭은 내가 바로 그 창조의 원천이기 때문이니라.
TEXT 5:
And yet everything that is created does not rest in Me. Behold My mystic opulence! Although I am the maintainer of all living entities and although I am everywhere, I am not a part of this cosmic manifestation, for My Self is the very source of creation.
제6절:
모든 곳에 부는 강한 바람이 하늘에 항상 있는 것처럼 모든 피조물이 내 안에 머물고 있다는 사실을 알아라.
TEXT 6:
Understand that as the mighty wind, blowing everywhere, rests always in the sky, all created beings rest in Me.
제7절:
오 꾼띠의 아들이여, 이 시대의 끝에 모든 물질적 발현은 내 본성에 들어가고, 또 다른 시대의 시작이 오면 내 힘으로 나는 그들을 다시 창조하느니라.
TEXT 7:
O son of Kuntī, at the end of the millennium all material manifestations enter into My nature, and at the beginning of another millennium, by My potency, I create them again.
제8절:
전 우주의 질서가 내 속에 있다. 나의 의지로 그것은 저절로 다시, 또다시 발현되고, 나의 의지로 결국 파괴되느니라.
TEXT 8:
The whole cosmic order is under Me. Under My will it is automatically manifested again and again, and under My will it is annihilated at the end.
제9절:
오 다난자야, 이 모든 일이 나를 구속할 수 없느니라. 나는 이 모든 물질적 활동에서 늘 초연하고 중립적인 것처럼 자리한다.
TEXT 9:
O Dhanañjaya, all this work cannot bind Me. I am ever detached from all these material activities, seated as though neutral.
제10절:
내 에너지 가운데 하나인 이 물질적 본성은 내 지시대로 작용하며, 움직이고 움직이지 않는 모든 것을 만들어 낸다, 오! 꾼띠의 아들이여. 이 발현은 그 법칙에 따라 거듭 창조되었다가 파괴되느니라.
TEXT 10:
This material nature, which is one of My energies, is working under My direction, O son of Kuntī, producing all moving and nonmoving beings. Under its rule this manifestation is created and annihilated again and again.
제11절:
어리석은 자들은 내가 인간의 형상으로 강림할 때 나를 비웃는다. 그들은 존재하는 모든 것의 지고한 주인 나의 초월적 본성을 모른다.
TEXT 11:
Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature as the Supreme Lord of all that be.
제12절:
따라서 혼돈에 빠진 자들은 악마적이며 무신론적인 견해에 이끌리느니라. 그러한 현혹된 상태에서 해방과 결실을 낳는 행위, 그리고 지식 배양을 원하는 그들의 희망은 모두 좌절되고 만다.
TEXT 12:
Those who are thus bewildered are attracted by demonic and atheistic views. In that deluded condition, their hopes for liberation, their fruitive activities, and their culture of knowledge are all defeated.
제13절:
오 쁘리타의 아들이여, 현혹되지 않은 자들, 위대한 영혼들은 신성한 본성의 보호를 받는다. 그들은 내가 기원이며 소멸하지 않는 최고인격신이라는 것을 알기에 봉헌에 완전히 임하느니라.
TEXT 13:
O son of Pṛthā, those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible.
제14절:
항상 나의 영광을 노래하고, 굳은 결심으로 노력하며, 내 앞에 절하는 위대한 영혼들은 영원히 나를 숭배한다.
TEXT 14:
Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion.
제15절:
지식의 배양으로 희생하고, 우주적 형상으로서 지고한 주를 숭배하는 다른 자들 또한 다양한 방식 중 하나로 나를 섬기는 것이다.
TEXT 15:
Others, who engage in sacrifice by the cultivation of knowledge, worship the Supreme Lord as the one without a second, as diverse in many, and in the universal form.
제 16 절:
그러나 내가 바로 의식이며, 내가 희생, 조상에 바치는 것, 약초, 초월적 구송이다. 나는 버터이고 불이며 제물이다.
TEXT 16:
But it is I who am the ritual, I the sacrifice, the offering to the ancestors, the healing herb, the transcendental chant. I am the butter and the fire and the offering.
제17절:
나는 이 우주의 아버지이고, 어머니, 후원자, 그리고 조상이다. 나는 지식의 대상이고, 정화제이며 그리고 음절 옴이다. 나는 또한 리그, 사마 그리고 야주르베다이니라.
TEXT 17:
I am the father of this universe, the mother, the support and the grandsire. I am the object of knowledge, the purifier and the syllable oṁ. I am also the Ṛg, the Sāma and the Yajur Vedas.
제18절:
나는 목표, 유지자, 주인, 증인, 보금자리, 은신처, 그리고 가장 친한 친구이다. 나는 창조, 파괴, 모든 것의 근본이고, 휴식처이며 영원한 씨앗이다.
TEXT 18:
I am the goal, the sustainer, the master, the witness, the abode, the refuge and the most dear friend. I am the creation and the annihilation, the basis of everything, the resting place and the eternal seed.
제19절:
오 아르주나, 내가 열(온기)을 주고, 내가 비를 보내고 그치게 하느니라. 나는 불멸이며 나는 또한 죽음의 구현이니라. 영혼과 물질 모두 내 안에 있다.
TEXT 19:
O Arjuna, I give heat, and I withhold and send forth the rain. I am immortality, and I am also death personified. Both spirit and matter are in Me.
제20절:
천상의 행성들에 가고자 베다를 공부하고 소마 주스를 마시는 자들은 나를 간접적으로 숭배하는 것이다. 죄업을 씻은 후, 그들은 경건한 천상의 행성인 인드라 행성에 태어나 그곳에서 신성한 즐거움을 누리게 된다.
TEXT 20:
Those who study the Vedas and drink the soma juice, seeking the heavenly planets, worship Me indirectly. Purified of sinful reactions, they take birth on the pious, heavenly planet of Indra, where they enjoy godly delights.
제21절:
따라서 천상의 커다란 감각 만족을 즐기고 나서 경건한 행위의 결과가 다하면 그들은 다시 죽음의 이 땅으로 돌아온다. 결국 세 베다의 원칙들을 잘 지킴으로써 감각 만족을 추구하는 자들은 거듭된 생사만을 얻을 뿐이다.
TEXT 21:
When they have thus enjoyed vast heavenly sense pleasure and the results of their pious activities are exhausted, they return to this mortal planet again. Thus those who seek sense enjoyment by adhering to the principles of the three Vedas achieve only repeated birth and death.
제22절:
그러나 나의 초월적 형상을 명상하며 헌애로써만 항상 나를 숭배하는 자들에게 나는 그들이 부족한 것을 채워 주고, 그들이 가지고 있는 것을 지켜주느니라.
TEXT 22:
But those who always worship Me with exclusive devotion, meditating on My transcendental form – to them I carry what they lack, and I preserve what they have.
제23절:
다른 데바들을 믿음으로 숭배하는 자들과 그들의 헌애자는 실제로 나만을 숭배하는 것이다, 오 꾼띠의 아들이여. 그러나 그들은 잘못된 방식으로 나를 섬기고 있다.
TEXT 23:
Those who are devotees of other gods and who worship them with faith actually worship only Me, O son of Kuntī, but they do so in a wrong way.
제 24 절:
나는 모든 희생의 유일한 향유자이며 주인이다. 그러므로 나의 진정한 초월적 본성을 깨닫지 못하는 자는 떨어진다.
TEXT 24:
I am the only enjoyer and master of all sacrifices. Therefore, those who do not recognize My true transcendental nature fall down.
제25절:
데바들을 숭배하는 자들은 데바들 사이에서 태어나고, 조상을 숭배하는 자들은 조상들에게 가고, 유령과 혼백을 숭배하는 자들은 그러한 것들 가운데 태어나고, 나를 숭배하는 자들은 나와 함께 살 것이다.
TEXT 25:
Those who worship the demigods will take birth among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will take birth among such beings; and those who worship Me will live with Me.
제26절:
나에게 사랑과 헌신으로 잎 하나, 꽃 한 송이, 과일 하나 또는 물을 바치면 나는 그것을 받아들이노라.
TEXT 26:
If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I will accept it.
제27절:
무엇을 하든, 무엇을 먹든, 무엇을 바치거나 나누어 주든, 그리고 어떠한 고행을 하든, 오 꾼띠의 아들이여, 그것을 나에게 바치는 것으로서 하여라.
TEXT 27:
Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer or give away, and whatever austerities you perform – do that, O son of Kuntī, as an offering to Me.
제28절:
이런 식으로 너는 일에서의 속박과 그것의 상서롭고 상서롭지 못한 결과에서 벗어날 것이다. 버림의 원칙으로 네 마음을 나에게 집중하면 너는 해방되고 나에게로 올 것이니라.
TEXT 28:
In this way you will be freed from bondage to work and its auspicious and inauspicious results. With your mind fixed on Me in this principle of renunciation, you will be liberated and come to Me.
제29절:
나는 그 누구를 시기하지도 편애하지도 않는다. 나는 모두에게 공평하다. 그러나 헌애로 나를 섬기는 자는 누구나 내 친구이고 내 안에 있으며 나는 또한 그의 친구이다.
TEXT 29:
I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all. But whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is in Me, and I am also a friend to him.
제30절:
설령 가장 끔찍한 일을 저지르더라도, 그가 봉헌에 종사하면 성인으로 여겨야 마땅한데, 그 이유는 그가 굳은 결심으로 올바른 위치에 있기 때문이다.
TEXT 30:
Even if one commits the most abominable action, if he is engaged in devotional service he is to be considered saintly because he is properly situated in his determination.
제31절:
그는 곧 정의로운 인간이 되어 지속되는 평화를 얻을 것이다. 오 꾼띠의 아들이여, 나의 헌애자는 절대 소멸하지 않는다고 대담하게 선언하여라.
TEXT 31:
He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kuntī, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes.
제32절:
오 쁘리타의 아들이여, 나에게 은신하는 자들은, 여자들과 바이샤(상인들), 그리고 슈드라(노동자들) 같은 낮은 출신이라고 하더라도 최상의 목적지에 이를 것이다.
TEXT 32:
O son of Pṛthā, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of lower birth – women, vaiśyas [merchants] and śūdras [workers] – can attain the supreme destination.
제33절:
정의로운 브라흐마나들과 헌애자들, 그리고 성스러운 왕들에게는 얼마만큼 더 그러하겠는가? 그러므로 이 일시적이고, 고통스러운 물질계에 이왕 왔으니 나에게 사랑의 봉사를 하여라.
TEXT 33:
How much more this is so of the righteous brāhmaṇas, the devotees and the saintly kings. Therefore, having come to this temporary, miserable world, engage in loving service unto Me.
제34절:
네 마음을 항상 나를 생각하는 데 두고, 나의 헌애자가 되어 나에게 절하며 나를 숭배하여라. 나에게 완전히 전념하면 너는 나에게로 반드시 올 것이다.
TEXT 34:
Engage your mind always in thinking of Me, become My devotee, offer obeisances to Me and worship Me. Being completely absorbed in Me, surely you will come to Me.
