rāgī karma-phala-prepsur
lubdho hiṁsātmako ’śuciḥ
harṣa-śokānvitaḥ kartā
rājasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ

Translation

Celui qui s’attache à son labeur et aux fruits de son labeur parce qu’il désire en jouir, qui est avide, toujours envieux, impur, ballotté par les joies et les peines, vit sous l’emprise de la passion.

The worker who is attached to work and the fruits of work, desiring to enjoy those fruits, and who is greedy, always envious, impure, and moved by joy and sorrow, is said to be in the mode of passion.

Purport

Si un homme est trop attaché à une activité particulière ou au fruit de son labeur, cela signifie qu’il est trop attaché à sa condition matérielle, à son foyer, à sa femme et à ses enfants. Ce genre d’homme n’a aucun désir d’atteindre un niveau d’existence supérieur. Il a pour seule préoccupation de faire de ce monde un lieu aussi confortable que possible, matériellement parlant. Il est très avide et croit que tous les biens acquis sont permanents, qu’il ne les perdra jamais. Il jalouse autrui et il est prêt à n’importe quelle action coupable pour satisfaire ses sens. Il est impur et peu lui importe de gagner sa vie de façon honnête ou malhonnête. Il est content lorsque ses actes sont couronnés de succès, et déprimé lorsqu’ils échouent. Un tel homme vit sous l’empire de la passion.

A person is too much attached to a certain kind of work or to the result because he has too much attachment for materialism or hearth and home, wife and children. Such a person has no desire for higher elevation in life. He is simply concerned with making this world as materially comfortable as possible. He is generally very greedy, and he thinks that anything attained by him is permanent and never to be lost. Such a person is envious of others and prepared to do anything wrong for sense gratification. Therefore such a person is unclean, and he does not care whether his earning is pure or impure. He is very happy if his work is successful and very much distressed when his work is not successful. Such is the worker in the mode of passion.
