āhāras tv api sarvasya
tri-vidho bhavati priyaḥ
yajñas tapas tathā dānaṁ
teṣāṁ bhedam imaṁ śṛṇu

Translation

On peut, à l’instar des sacrifices, des actes de charité et des austérités, ranger les aliments auxquels vont nos préférences en trois catégories, chacune correspondant à l’influence particulière d’un guṇa. Écoute maintenant ce qui les distingue.

Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them.

On trouvera, correspondant aux diverses influences des guṇas, diverses manières de manger, d’accomplir des sacrifices, de pratiquer des austérités et de faire la charité. Elles ne se situent pas toutes à un même niveau. Celui qui peut comprendre, de façon analytique, de quel guṇa elles relèvent est un vrai sage, au contraire du sot qui ne sait pas distinguer entre les diverses formes de nourriture, sacrifice ou charité. Bien sûr, il y aura toujours des prédicateurs pour enseigner qu’on peut atteindre la perfection en agissant comme bon nous semble. Mais ces faux guides vont à l’encontre des Écritures. Ils inventent leurs propres méthodes et égarent les foules.

In terms of different situations in the modes of material nature, there are differences in the manner of eating and performing sacrifices, austerities and charities. They are not all conducted on the same level. Those who can understand analytically what kind of performances are in what modes of material nature are actually wise; those who consider all kinds of sacrifice or food or charity to be the same cannot discriminate, and they are foolish. There are missionary workers who advocate that one can do whatever he likes and attain perfection. But these foolish guides are not acting according to the direction of the scripture. They are manufacturing ways and misleading the people in general.
