vyasubhir vāsumadbhir vā
surāsura-mahoragaiḥ
apratidvandvatāṁ yuddhe
aika-patyaṁ ca dehinām

sarveṣāṁ loka-pālānāṁ
mahimānaṁ yathātmanaḥ
tapo-yoga-prabhāvāṇāṁ
yan na riṣyati karhicit

Translation

Concédeme que no me mate ningún ser viviente ni no viviente. Concédeme además, que no me mate ningún semidiós, ningún demonio, ni ninguna gran serpiente de los planetas inferiores. Tú no tienes rival, porque nadie puede matarte en el campo de batalla. Por eso, concédeme la bendición de que tampoco yo tenga rival. Dame el dominio exclusivo sobre todas las entidades vivientes y deidades regentes, y dame toda la gloria propia de esa posición. Dame, además, todos los poderes místicos que se obtienen por realizar largas austeridades y practicar yoga, ya que no pueden perderse en ningún momento.

Grant me that I not meet death from any entity, living or nonliving. Grant me, further, that I not be killed by any demigod or demon or by any great snake from the lower planets. Since no one can kill you in the battlefield, you have no competitor. Therefore, grant me the benediction that I too may have no rival. Give me sole lordship over all the living entities and presiding deities, and give me all the glories obtained by that position. Furthermore, give me all the mystic powers attained by long austerities and the practice of yoga, for these cannot be lost at any time.

Purport

El Señor Brahmā alcanzó su posición de supremacía por medio de las austeridades y penitencias, yogamístico, meditación, etc., que realizó durante mucho tiempo. Hiraṇyakaśipu quería una posición como la suya. Los poderes que normalmente se obtienen por medio del yoga místico, las austeridades y otros procesos, a veces se pierden, pero los poderes que se obtienen por la misericordia del Señor nunca se pierden. De modo que Hiraṇyakaśipu quería la bendición de no ser vencido nunca.

Lord Brahmā obtained his supreme position due to long austerities and penances, mystic yoga, meditation and so on. Hiraṇyakaśipu wanted a similar position. The ordinary powers achieved by mystic yoga, austerities and other processes are sometimes vanquished, but the powers obtained by the mercy of the Lord are never vanquished. Hiraṇyakaśipu, therefore, wanted a benediction that would never be vanquished.
