yatra viśvaṁ pratiṣṭhitam
ātmānaṁ ca prajāś cemāḥ
katham ambhasi dhāsyasi

Translation

La Tierra en forma de vaca continuó: Mi querido rey, soy como una sólida barca que sostiene todo lo que existe en el mundo. Si me haces pedazos, ¿qué protección darás a tus súbditos? Tanto tú como ellos, se ahogarán.

The cow-shaped earth continued: My dear King, I am just like a strong boat, and all the paraphernalia of the world is standing upon me. If you break me to pieces, how can you protect yourself and your subjects from drowning?

Por debajo de todo el sistema planetario se encuentra el agua garbha. El Señor Viṣṇu está acostado en esa agua garbha, y de Su abdomen brota un tallo de loto, que sostiene todos los planetas en el aire. Si un planeta es destruido, tiene que caer al agua de garbha. Por esa razón, la Tierra advirtió al rey de que no ganaría nada destruyéndola. En efecto, ¿cómo impediría que sus súbditos y él mismo se ahogasen en el agua garbha? En otras palabras, el espacio exterior puede compararse a un océano de aire, en el que todos los planetas flotan como las barcas o las islas en el mar. A veces a los planetas se les da el nombre de dvīpa, «islas», y otras veces se dice que son barcas. De este modo, la Tierra en forma de vaca da una explicación parcial de la manifestación cósmica.

Beneath the entire planetary system is the garbha water. Lord Viṣṇu lies on this garbha water, and from His abdomen a lotus stem grows, and all the planets within the universe are floating in the air, being supported by this lotus stem. If a planet is destroyed, it must fall into the water of garbha. The earth therefore warned King Pṛthu that he could gain nothing by destroying her. Indeed, how would he protect himself and his citizens from drowning in the garbha water? In other words, outer space may be compared to an ocean of air, and each and every planet is floating on it just as a boat or island floats on the ocean. Sometimes planets are called dvīpa, or islands, and sometimes they are called boats. Thus the cosmic manifestation is partially explained in this reference by the cow-shaped earth.
