Translation

Cuando apareció un deseo de percibir las características físicas de la materia, tales como la suavidad, la dureza, el calor, el frío, la liviandad y la pesadez, se generaron el trasfondo de la sensación, la piel, los poros cutáneos, los vellos del cuerpo y sus deidades controladoras (los árboles). Por dentro y por fuera de la piel se encuentra una cobertura de aire a través de la cual se hizo patente la percepción de los sentidos.

When there was a desire to perceive the physical characteristics of matter, such as softness, hardness, warmth, cold, lightness and heaviness, the background of sensation, the skin, the skin pores, the hairs on the body and their controlling deities (the trees) were generated. Within and outside the skin is a covering of air through which sense perception became prominent.

Las características físicas de la materia, tales como la suavidad, son objetos de la percepción de los sentidos, y, así pues, el conocimiento físico es el objeto de la sensación del tacto. Uno puede medir la temperatura de la materia si la toca con la mano, y uno puede medir el peso de un objeto si lo levanta con la mano, y, con ello, puede estimar su pesadez o liviandad. La piel, los poros cutáneos y los vellos del cuerpo son todos interdependientes con la sensación del tacto. El aire que sopla dentro y fuera de la piel es también un objeto de la percepción de los sentidos. The physical characteristics of matter, such as softness, are subjects of sense perception, and thus physical knowledge is the subject matter of the touch sensation. One can measure the temperature of matter by touching with the hand, and one can measure the weight of an object by lifting it with the hand and thus estimate its heaviness or lightness. The skin, the skin pores and the hairs on the body are all interdependent with the touch sensation. The air blowing within and outside the skin is also an object of sense perception. This sense perception is also a source of knowledge, and therefore it is suggested here that physical or physiological knowledge is subordinate to the knowledge of the Self, as above mentioned. Knowledge of Self can expand to the knowledge of phenomena, but physical knowledge cannot lead to knowledge of the Self.

Sin embargo, existe una íntima relación entre los vellos del cuerpo y la vegetación del cuerpo de la Tierra. Los vegetales son un nutrimento para la piel, tanto en la forma de comida como de medicina, tal como se afirma en el Tercer Canto: tvacam asya vinirbhinnāṁ viviśur dhiṣṇyam osādhīh.

There is, however, an intimate relation between the hairs on the body and the vegetation on the body of the earth. The vegetables are nourishment for the skin both as food and medicine, as stated in the Third Canto: tvacam asya vinirbhinnāṁ viviśur dhiṣṇyam oṣadhīḥ.
