Translation

Pero a la nueva cuerda le faltaba también el ancho de dos dedos. Cuando le añadió otro cabo, seguía siendo dos dedos demasiado corta. Por más cuerdas que añadía, no conseguía nada; no había manera de completar aquella separación.

This new rope also was short by a measurement of two fingers, and when another rope was joined to it, it was still two fingers too short. As many ropes as she joined, all of them failed; their shortness could not be overcome.
