Después de las lluvias torrenciales, los campos y bosques en todas direcciones se ven verdes y saludables. Así ellos se parecen a un hombre que ha cumplido severas austeridades por algún beneficio material y ha logrado ya su propósito, ya que un hombre así, es fuerte, saludable y atractivo.
4. After heavy rain showers, the fields and forests in all directions appear green and healthy. Thus they resemble a man who has undergone severe austerities for some material gain and has achieved his end, for such a man is strong, hearty, and good-looking.
El verdor de la estación lluviosa no es más que una demostración temporal. Se ve muy agradable, pero debemos recordar que no durará. Similarmente, existen personas que se someten a severas austeridades por algún beneficio material. Aquellos que son sensatos, evitan esto. Las austeridades severas por beneficios temporales son simplemente una pérdida de tiempo y energía. La pérdida y la ganancia material están destinadas de acuerdo con la formación de cada cuerpo particular. Existen 8, 400, 000 especies de vida y cada tipo de cuerpo está destinado a disfrutar y sufrir de acuerdo con su formación particular. Los placeres y los sufrimientos corporales del hijo de un hombre rico son diferentes a los del hijo de un hombre pobre. Aunque nadie se somete a severas austeridades para obtener miserias, éstas llegan sin que se lo pidan. Similarmente, la felicidad que estamos destinados a disfrutar, nos llega aun sin desearla.
Aun si fuéramos capaces de evitar la aflicción y disfrutar artificialmente de alguna felicidad material por méritos temporales, no representa ningún beneficio verdadero en la vida. Nuestro deber es lograr felicidad permanente y vida eterna. Es únicamente con tal propósito - por el máximo beneficio - que debemos emprender todo tipo de penitencias y austeridades.
The greenery of the rainy season is but a temporary show. It looks very pleasant, but we must remember that it will not last. Similarly, there are persons who undergo severe austerities for some material gain, but those who are sane avoid this. Severe austerities for temporary gains are simply a waste of time and energy. Material loss and gain are destined in accordance with the formation of each particular body. There are 8,400,000 species of life, and each type of body is destined to enjoy and suffer in accordance with its particular formation. The bodily enjoyments and sufferings of a wealthy man's son are different from those of a poor man's son. Although no one undergoes severe austerities to obtain distress, it comes upon us uncalled. Similarly, the happiness we are destined to enjoy will come upon us even without our desires. Even though we may be able to avoid distress and artificially enjoy some material happiness by temporary achievements, this represents no factual gain in life. Our duty is to achieve permanent happiness and eternal life, and it is for that purpose only—for the ultimate gain—that we should undertake all sorts of penances and austerities.
Este beneficio máximo se puede lograr en la forma humana de vida. La felicidad permanente es posible cuando uno se encuentra libre de las causas materiales de la felicidad, ya que la continuación de la esclavitud material significa la continuación de las tres miserias. La vida humana sirve para terminar con estas miserias.
This ultimate gain is possible to achieve in the human form of life. permanent happiness is possible when one is free from material sources of happiness, for continuation of material bondage means continuation of the threefold miseries. Human life is meant for ending these miseries.
No debemos tratar de ser hermosos como las flores de la estación o el verdor, que florece en la estación lluviosa, pero que se fatiga en el invierno. No es nada deseable vivificarse con las nubes de ignorancia y disfrutar de la visión del verdor temporal. Uno debe tratar de vivir en el despejado cielo infinito inundado por los rayos del Sol y la Luna. Esto es lo que realmente deseamos. Una vida de libertad en eternidad, conocimiento completo y una atmósfera bienaventurada es el profundo deseo de un alma iluminada. Debemos someternos a todo tipo de austeridades y penitencias para alcanzar esa fuente permanente de felicidad.
We should not try to be beautiful like seasonal flowers or greenery that flourish in the rainy season but are weary in the winter. To be enlivened by the clouds of ignorance overhead and to enjoy the sight of temporary greenery is not at all desirable. One should try to live in the unlimited clear sky overflooded with the rays of the sun and moon. That is what we actually desire. A life of freedom in eternity, complete knowledge, and a blissful atmosphere is the heart's desire of an enlightened soul. We should undertake all sorts of penances and austerities to attain that permanent source of happiness.
