kṣaṇe mana sthira haya, tabe mane vicāraya,
balite ha-ila bhāvodgama
piṅgalāra vacana-smṛti, karāila bhāva-mati,
tāte kare artha-nirdhāraṇa

Translation

De pronto, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Se tranquilizó y analizó Su estado mental. Recordó las palabras de Piṅgalā, y esto hizo surgir un éxtasis que Le motivó a hablar. De ese modo explicó el significado del verso.

Suddenly, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu became calm and considered His state of mind. He remembered the words of Piṅgalā, and this aroused an ecstasy that moved Him to speak. Thus He explained the meaning of the verse.

Purport

Piṅgalā era una prostituta que dijo: «Esperar contra toda esperanza sólo trae miseria. La mayor felicidad es haber perdido por completo la esperanza». Recordando esas palabras, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Se llenó de éxtasis. La historia de Piṅgalā aparece en el Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (11.8. 22-44), así como en el Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva, Capítulo 174.

Piṅgalā was a prostitute who said, “To hope against hope produces only misery. Utter hopelessness is the greatest happiness.” Remembering this statement, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu became ecstatic. The story of Piṅgalā is found in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Eleventh Canto, eighth chapter, verses 22-44, as well as in the Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva, chapter 174.
