Translation

El Señor respondió: «Por la gracia del Señor, uno puede llegar a ser un gran poeta, e igualmente por Su gracia, otro puede llegar a ser un gran śruti-dhara que puede memorizar cualquier cosa inmediatamente».

The Lord replied, “By the grace of the Lord someone may become a great poet, and similarly by His grace someone else may become a great śruti-dhara who can memorize anything immediately.”

A este respecto, śruti-dhara es una palabra muy importante. Śruti significa «audición», y dhara significa «aquel que puede capturar». En tiempos pasados, antes de que comenzase Kali-yuga, casi todos, especialmente los hombres inteligentes, los brāhmaṇas, eran śruti-dharas. En cuanto un estudiante oía cualquiera de las enseñanzas védicas de labios de su maestro, las recordaba para siempre. No era necesario hacer referencias a libros y, por tanto, en aquellos días no se escribían libros. El maestro espiritual entregaba los himnos védicos y daba su explicación a los estudiantes, que los recordarían para siempre sin consultar libro alguno.

In this connection, śruti-dhara is a very important word. Śruti means “hearing,” and dhara means “one who can capture.” Formerly, before the beginning of Kali-yuga, almost everyone, especially among the intelligent men, the brāhmaṇas, was a śruti-dhara. As soon as a student heard any of the Vedic wisdom from his master, he would remember it forever. There was no need to refer to books, and therefore there were no written books in those days. The spiritual master delivered the Vedic hymns and their explanations to the student, who would then remember them forever, without consulting books.

Llegar a ser un śruti-dhara, alguien que puede recordar sólo con oír, es un gran logro para un estudiante. En la Bhagavad-gītā (10.41), dice el Señor:

To become a śruti-dhara, one who can remember simply by hearing, is a great achievement for a student. In the Bhagavad-gītā (10.41) the Lord says:

yad yad vibhūtimat sattvaṁ śrīmad ūrjitam eva vā
tat tad evāvagaccha tvaṁ mama tejo-’ṁśa-sambhavam

«Debes saber que todas las creaciones hermosas, gloriosas y poderosas brotan de una sola chispa de Mi esplendor».

“Know that all opulent, beautiful and glorious creations spring from but a spark of My splendor.”

En cuanto encontremos algo extraordinario, debemos comprender que esa manifestación extraordinaria es la gracia especial de la Suprema Personalidad de Dios. Por tanto, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu respondió al campeón, Keśava Kāśmīrī, que así como él estaba muy orgulloso de ser uno de los devotos predilectos de madre Sarasvatī, también alguna otra persona, como Caitanya Mahāprabhu mismo, habiendo recibido el favor de la Suprema Personalidad de Dios, podía llegar a ser un śruti-dhara y así memorizar cualquier cosa inmediatamente con sólo oírla.

As soon as we find anything extraordinary, we should understand that such an extraordinary manifestation is the special grace of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu replied to the champion, Keśava Kāśmīrī, that just as he was greatly proud of being a favorite devotee of mother Sarasvatī, so someone else, like Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself, being favored by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, could become a śruti-dhara and thus memorize anything immediately simply by hearing it.
