Text 1:: O my Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, son of Vasudeva, O all-pervading Personality of Godhead, I offer my respectful obeisances unto You. I meditate upon Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa because He is the Absolute Truth and the primeval cause of all causes of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the manifested universes. He is directly and indirectly conscious of all manifestations, and He is independent because there is no other cause beyond Him. It is He only who first imparted the Vedic knowledge unto the heart of Brahmājī, the original living being. By Him even the great sages and demigods are placed into illusion, as one is bewildered by the illusory representations of water seen in fire, or land seen on water. Only because of Him do the material universes, temporarily manifested by the reactions of the three modes of nature, appear factual, although they are unreal. I therefore meditate upon Him, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is eternally existent in the transcendental abode, which is forever free from the illusory representations of the material world. I meditate upon Him, for He is the Absolute Truth.

Text 1:: ¡Oh, mi Señor, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, hijo de Vasudeva!, ¡oh, Personalidad de Dios omnipresente!, a Ti Te ofrezco mis respetuosas reverencias. Yo medito en el Señor Śrī Kṛṣṇa, porque Él es la Verdad Absoluta y la causa primordial de todas las causas de la creación, conservación y destrucción de los universos manifestados. Él está directa e indirectamente consciente de todas las manifestaciones, y es independiente, pues no existe ninguna otra causa más allá de Él. En el principio fue únicamente Él quien impartió el conocimiento védico en el corazón de Brahmājī, el ser viviente original. Él hace que hasta los grandes sabios y semidioses se engañen, tal como a uno lo confunden las representaciones ilusorias del agua que se ve en el fuego, o de la tierra que se ve en el agua. Únicamente debido a Él, los universos materiales, manifestados temporalmente por las reacciones de las tres modalidades de la naturaleza, parecen reales, aunque son irreales. Por consiguiente, yo medito en Él, el Señor Śrī Kṛṣṇa, quien existe eternamente en la morada trascendental, la cual siempre está libre de las representaciones ilusorias del mundo material. Yo medito en Él, pues Él es la Verdad Absoluta.

Text 2:: Completely rejecting all religious activities which are materially motivated, this Bhāgavata Purāṇa propounds the highest truth, which is understandable by those devotees who are fully pure in heart. The highest truth is reality distinguished from illusion for the welfare of all. Such truth uproots the threefold miseries. This beautiful Bhāgavatam, compiled by the great sage Vyāsadeva [in his maturity], is sufficient in itself for God realization. What is the need of any other scripture? As soon as one attentively and submissively hears the message of Bhāgavatam, by this culture of knowledge the Supreme Lord is established within his heart.

Text 2:: Rechazando por completo todas las actividades religiosas que tienen motivaciones materiales, este Bhāgavata Purāṇa expone la verdad más elevada que existe, y que entienden aquellos devotos cuyo corazón está totalmente puro. La verdad más elevada que existe es la realidad que, por el bien de todos, se hace distinguir de lo ilusorio. Esa verdad elimina el sufrimiento triple. Este hermoso Bhāgavatam, recopilado por el gran sabio Vyāsadeva [en su madurez], es suficiente en sí para comprender a Dios. ¿Qué necesidad hay de alguna otra Escritura? Tan pronto como se cultiva conocimiento mediante el hecho de oír atenta y sumisamente el mensaje del Bhāgavatam, el Señor Supremo se establece en el corazón de uno.

Text 3:: O expert and thoughtful men, relish Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, the mature fruit of the desire tree of Vedic literatures. It emanated from the lips of Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī. Therefore this fruit has become even more tasteful, although its nectarean juice was already relishable for all, including liberated souls.

Text 3:: ¡Oh, hombres pensadores y expertos!, saboreen el Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, el fruto maduro de las Escrituras védicas, las cuales son como un árbol de los deseos. Puesto que ese fruto ha emanado de los labios de Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī, se ha vuelto aún más sabroso, si bien todos, incluso las almas liberadas, consideraban que su nectáreo jugo ya era apetitoso.

Text 4:: Once, in a holy place in the forest of Naimiṣāraṇya, great sages headed by the sage Śaunaka assembled to perform a great thousand-year sacrifice for the satisfaction of the Lord and His devotees.

Text 4:: Una vez, en un lugar sagrado del bosque de Naimiṣāraṇya y en aras de la satisfacción del Señor y Sus devotos, unos grandes sabios, encabezados por el sabio Śaunaka, se reunieron a fin de realizar un gran sacrificio de mil años de duración.

Text 5:: One day, after finishing their morning duties by burning a sacrificial fire and offering a seat of esteem to Śrīla Sūta Gosvāmī, the great sages made inquiries, with great respect, about the following matters.

Text 5:: Un día, después de encender el fuego de sacrificio, ofrecerle un asiento de honor a Śrīla Sūta Gosvāmī y concluir así sus deberes matutinos, los grandes sabios, con mucho respeto, hicieron preguntas acerca de los temas siguientes.

Text 6:: The sages said: Respected Sūta Gosvāmī, you are completely free from all vice. You are well versed in all the scriptures famous for religious life, and in the Purāṇas and the histories as well, for you have gone through them under proper guidance and have also explained them.

Text 6:: Los sabios dijeron: respetado Sūta Gosvāmī, tú estás completamente libre de todo vicio, y estás bien versado en todas las Escrituras famosas por la vida religiosa que presentan, así como también en los Purāṇas y las historias, pues los has examinado a fondo, bajo la guía apropiada, y también los has explicado.

Text 7:: Being the eldest learned Vedāntist, O Sūta Gosvāmī, you are acquainted with the knowledge of Vyāsadeva, who is the incarnation of Godhead, and you also know other sages who are fully versed in all kinds of physical and metaphysical knowledge.

Text 7:: ¡Oh, Sūta Gosvāmī!, como tú eres el vedantista erudito de mayor edad, estás familiarizado con el conocimiento de Vyāsadeva, la encarnación de Dios, y además conoces a otros sabios que están plenamente versados en todas las clases de conocimiento físico y metafísico.

Text 8:: And because you are submissive, your spiritual masters have endowed you with all the favors bestowed upon a gentle disciple. Therefore you can tell us all that you have scientifically learned from them.

Text 8:: Y porque tú eres sumiso, tus maestros espirituales te han concedido todas las gracias que se le otorgan a un discípulo sencillo. Por lo tanto, tú puedes decirnos todo lo que has aprendido científicamente de ellos.

Text 9:: Please, therefore, being blessed with many years, explain to us, in an easily understandable way, what you have ascertained to be the absolute and ultimate good for the people in general.

Text 9:: Así que, como has sido bendecido con una larga vida, por favor explícanos de una manera fácilmente comprensible, lo que has averiguado que es el absoluto y máximo bien para la gente en general.

Text 10:: O learned one, in this iron Age of Kali men almost always have but short lives. They are quarrelsome, lazy, misguided, unlucky and, above all, always disturbed.

Text 10:: ¡Oh, sabio!, en esta era de Kali, la era de hierro, los hombres no tienen sino una vida corta; son pendencieros, perezosos, mal dirigidos, desafortunados y, sobre todo, siempre están perturbados.

Text 11:: There are many varieties of scriptures, and in all of them there are many prescribed duties, which can be learned only after many years of study in their various divisions. Therefore, O sage, please select the essence of all these scriptures and explain it for the good of all living beings, that by such instruction their hearts may be fully satisfied.

Text 11:: Existen muchas variedades de Escrituras, y en todas ellas hay muchos deberes prescritos, que pueden llegar a aprenderse solo después de muchos años de estudio en sus diferentes divisiones. Por consiguiente, ¡oh, sabio!, selecciona, por favor, lo que es la esencia de todas esas Escrituras, y explícala por el bien de todos los seres vivientes, de manera que, mediante dicha instrucción, sus corazones puedan ser satisfechos por completo.

Text 12:: All blessings upon you, O Sūta Gosvāmī. You know for what purpose the Personality of Godhead appeared in the womb of Devakī as the son of Vasudeva.

Text 12:: Todas las bendiciones a ti, ¡oh, Sūta Gosvāmī! Tú sabes con qué propósito apareció la Personalidad de Dios en el vientre de Devakī, como hijo de Vasudeva.

Text 13:: O Sūta Gosvāmī, we are eager to learn about the Personality of Godhead and His incarnations. Please explain to us those teachings imparted by previous masters [ācāryas], for one is uplifted both by speaking them and by hearing them.

Text 13:: ¡Oh, Sūta Gosvāmī!, estamos ansiosos por saber de la Personalidad de Dios y Sus encarnaciones. Por favor, explícanos esas enseñanzas que impartieron los maestros anteriores [ācāryas], pues uno se eleva tanto por hablarlas como por oírlas.

Text 14:: Living beings who are entangled in the complicated meshes of birth and death can be freed immediately by even unconsciously chanting the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, which is feared by fear personified.

Text 14:: Los seres vivientes que están atrapados en las complicadas redes del nacimiento y la muerte, pueden liberarse de inmediato con cantar aun inconscientemente el santo nombre de Kṛṣṇa, que es temido por el temor personificado.

Text 15:: O Sūta, those great sages who have completely taken shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord can at once sanctify those who come in touch with them, whereas the waters of the Ganges can sanctify only after prolonged use.

Text 15:: ¡Oh, Sūta!, esos grandes sabios que se han refugiado por completo en los pies de loto del Señor, pueden santificar de inmediato a aquellos que se ponen en contacto con ellos, mientras que las aguas del Ganges pueden santificar únicamente después de un uso prolongado.

Text 16:: Who is there, desiring deliverance from the vices of the age of quarrel, who is not willing to hear the virtuous glories of the Lord?

Text 16:: ¿Acaso hay alguien que, deseando liberarse de los vicios de esta era de riña, no esté dispuesto a oír hablar de las virtuosas glorias del Señor?

Text 17:: His transcendental acts are magnificent and gracious, and great learned sages like Nārada sing of them. Please, therefore, speak to us, who are eager to hear, about the adventures He performs in His various incarnations.

Text 17:: Sus actos trascendentales son magníficos y placenteros, y los cantan grandes y eruditos sabios, tales como Nārada. De manera que, por favor, háblanos, pues estamos ansiosos de oír hablar de las aventuras que Él lleva a cabo en Sus diversas encarnaciones.

Text 18:: O wise Sūta, please narrate to us the transcendental pastimes of the Supreme Godhead’s multi-incarnations. Such auspicious adventures and pastimes of the Lord, the supreme controller, are performed by His internal powers.

Text 18:: ¡Oh, sabio Sūta!, por favor, nárranos los pasatiempos trascendentales de las múltiples encarnaciones de la Divinidad Suprema. Esos auspiciosos pasatiempos y aventuras del Señor, el controlador supremo, los realizan Sus poderes internos.

Text 19:: We never tire of hearing the transcendental pastimes of the Personality of Godhead, who is glorified by hymns and prayers. Those who have developed a taste for transcendental relationships with Him relish hearing of His pastimes at every moment.

Text 19:: Nosotros nunca nos cansamos de oír hablar de los pasatiempos trascendentales de la Personalidad de Dios, a quien se le glorifica mediante himnos y oraciones. Aquellos que han desarrollado un gusto por las relaciones trascendentales que se tienen con Él, disfrutan de oír hablar de Sus pasatiempos en todo momento.

Text 20:: Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead, along with Balarāma, played like a human being, and so masked He performed many superhuman acts.

Text 20:: El Señor Śrī Kṛṣṇa, la Personalidad de Dios, junto con Balarāma, actuó como un ser humano y, disfrazado así, realizó muchos actos sobrehumanos.

Text 21:: Knowing well that the Age of Kali has already begun, we are assembled here in this holy place to hear at great length the transcendental message of Godhead and in this way perform sacrifice.

Text 21:: Sabiendo bien que la era de Kali ya ha comenzado, estamos reunidos aquí, en este sagrado lugar, para oír con todo detalle el mensaje trascendental de Dios, y de esa forma realizar sacrificio.

Text 22:: We think that we have met Your Goodness by the will of providence, just so that we may accept you as captain of the ship for those who desire to cross the difficult ocean of Kali, which deteriorates all the good qualities of a human being.

Text 22:: Nosotros creemos haber conocido a Su Gracia por la voluntad de la Providencia, solo para que lo aceptemos como capitán del barco de aquellos que desean atravesar el peligroso océano de Kali, el cual deteriora todas las buenas cualidades de un ser humano.

Text 23:: Since Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the Absolute Truth, the master of all mystic powers, has departed for His own abode, please tell us to whom the religious principles have now gone for shelter.

Text 23:: Como Śrī Kṛṣṇa, la Verdad Absoluta, el amo de todos los poderes místicos, ha partido hacia Su propia morada, por favor, dinos a quién han acudido ahora los principios religiosos en busca de refugio.
