अथवा योगिनामेव कुले भवति धीमताम् ।
एतद्धि दुर्लभतरं लोके जन्म यदीदृशम् ॥ ४२ ॥

kule bhavati dhīmatām
etad dhi durlabha-taraṁ
loke janma yad īdṛśam

Synonyms

atha vā — or; yoginām — of learned transcendentalists; eva — certainly; kule — in the family; bhavati — takes birth; dhī-matām — of those who are endowed with great wisdom; etat — this; hi — certainly; durlabha-taram — very rare; loke — in this world; janma — birth; yat — that which; īdṛśam — like this.

atha vā: ou; yoginām: de spiritualistes érudits; eva: certes; kule: dans la famille; bhavati: naît; dhī-matām: de ceux qui sont doués d’une grande sagesse; etat: cette; hi: certes; durlabha-taram: très rare; loke: en ce monde; janma: naissance; yat: ce que; īdṛśam: comme cela.

Translation

Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such a birth is rare in this world.

Ou encore il renaît dans une famille de sages spiritualistes. Mais en vérité il est rare, ici-bas, d’obtenir une telle naissance.

Purport

Birth in a family of yogīs or transcendentalists – those with great wisdom – is praised herein because the child born in such a family receives a spiritual impetus from the very beginning of his life. It is especially the case in the ācārya or gosvāmī families. Such families are very learned and devoted by tradition and training, and thus they become spiritual masters. In India there are many such ācārya families, but they have now degenerated due to insufficient education and training. By the grace of the Lord, there are still families that foster transcendentalists generation after generation. It is certainly very fortunate to take birth in such families. Fortunately, both our spiritual master, Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, and our humble self had the opportunity to take birth in such families, by the grace of the Lord, and both of us were trained in the devotional service of the Lord from the very beginning of our lives. Later on we met by the order of the transcendental system.

Dans ce verset le Seigneur explique qu’il est particulièrement avantageux de naître dans une famille de yogīs ou de spiritualistes – gens de grande sagesse – car c’est l’occasion, surtout si l’on renaît dans une famille d’ācāryas ou de gosvāmīs, d’être encouragé dès son plus jeune âge à la vie spirituelle. Par tradition autant que par éducation, les membres de ces familles sont érudits, voués à Dieu et deviennent des maîtres spirituels. On trouve encore aujourd’hui en Inde beaucoup de ces familles d’ācāryas, mais le déclin de l’éducation spirituelle a provoqué leur dégradation. Par la grâce du Seigneur, il en reste encore quelques-unes qui, de génération en génération, forment des spiritualistes élevés. Naître dans une telle famille est la plus grande faveur que l’on puisse recevoir. Notre maître spirituel, Oṁ Viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Gosvāmī Mahārāja, bénéficia de cette grâce. Notre humble personne également. Ainsi nous pûmes l’un et l’autre pratiquer le service de dévotion dès notre plus tendre enfance. Et plus tard, en vertu d’un arrangement divin, nos chemins se croisèrent.
