स निश्चयेन योक्तव्यो योगोऽनिर्विण्णचेतसा ।
सङ्कल्पप्रभवान्कामांस्त्यक्त्वा सर्वानशेषत: ।
मनसैवेन्द्रियग्रामं विनियम्य समन्तत: ॥ २४ ॥

sa niścayena yoktavyo
yogo ’nirviṇṇa-cetasā
saṅkalpa-prabhavān kāmāṁs
tyaktvā sarvān aśeṣataḥ

manasaivendriya-grāmaṁ
viniyamya samantataḥ

Synonyms

saḥ — that; niścayena — with firm determination; yoktavyaḥ — must be practiced; yogaḥ — yoga system; anirviṇṇa-cetasā — without deviation; saṅkalpa — mental speculations; prabhavān — born of; kāmān — material desires; tyaktvā — giving up; sarvān — all; aśeṣataḥ — completely; manasā — by the mind; eva — certainly; indriya-grāmam — the full set of senses; viniyamya — regulating; samantataḥ — from all sides.

saḥ — dieses; niścayena — mit überzeugter Entschlossenheit; yoktavyaḥ — muß praktiziert werden; yogaḥ — yoga-System; anirviṇṇa-cetasā — ohne Abweichung; saṅkalpa — gedankliche Spekulation; prabhavān — geboren aus; kāmān — materielle Wünsche; tyaktvā — aufgebend; sarvān — alle; aśeṣataḥ — vollständig; manasā — durch den Geist; eva — gewiß; indriya-grāmam — die Gesamtheit der Sinne; viniyamya — regulierend; samantataḥ — von allen Seiten.

Translation

One should engage oneself in the practice of yoga with determination and faith and not be deviated from the path. One should abandon, without exception, all material desires born of mental speculation and thus control all the senses on all sides by the mind.

Man sollte yoga mit Entschlossenheit und Glauben praktizieren und nicht vom Pfad abweichen. Man sollte alle materiellen Wünsche, die aus gedanklicher Spekulation entstehen, ohne Ausnahme aufgeben und so alle Sinne von allen Seiten durch den Geist beherrschen.

Purport

The yoga practitioner should be determined and should patiently prosecute the practice without deviation. One should be sure of success at the end and pursue this course with great perseverance, not becoming discouraged if there is any delay in the attainment of success. Success is sure for the rigid practitioner. Regarding bhakti-yoga, Rūpa Gosvāmī says:

ERLÄUTERUNG: Wer yoga praktiziert, sollte diesen Vorgang entschlossen und geduldig ausführen, ohne davon abzuweichen. Man sollte vom letztlichen Erfolg überzeugt sein und diesem Pfad mit großer Ausdauer folgen, ohne sich entmutigen zu lassen, wenn sich nicht sogleich Erfolg einstellt. Jedem, der strikt den Anweisungen folgt, ist Erfolg garantiert. Bezüglich bhakti-yoga sagt Rūpa Gosvāmī:

utsāhān niścayād dhairyāt
tat-tat-karma-pravartanāt
saṅga-tyāgāt sato vṛtteḥ
ṣaḍbhir bhaktiḥ prasidhyati

“One can execute the process of bhakti-yoga successfully with full-hearted enthusiasm, perseverance and determination, by following the prescribed duties in the association of devotees and by engaging completely in activities of goodness.” (Upadeśāmṛta 3)

„Wenn man den Vorgang des bhakti-yoga mit voller Begeisterung, Ausdauer und Entschlossenheit ausführt, den vorgeschriebenen Pflichten in der Gemeinschaft von Gottgeweihten folgt und ausschließlich in Tugend handelt, ist einem der Erfolg gewiß.“ (Upadeśāmṛta 3)

As for determination, one should follow the example of the sparrow who lost her eggs in the waves of the ocean. A sparrow laid her eggs on the shore of the ocean, but the big ocean carried away the eggs on its waves. The sparrow became very upset and asked the ocean to return her eggs. The ocean did not even consider her appeal. So the sparrow decided to dry up the ocean. She began to pick out the water in her small beak, and everyone laughed at her for her impossible determination. The news of her activity spread, and at last Garuḍa, the gigantic bird carrier of Lord Viṣṇu, heard it. He became compassionate toward his small sister bird, and so he came to see the sparrow. Garuḍa was very pleased by the determination of the small sparrow, and he promised to help. Thus Garuḍa at once asked the ocean to return her eggs lest he himself take up the work of the sparrow. The ocean was frightened at this, and returned the eggs. Thus the sparrow became happy by the grace of Garuḍa.

Was Entschlossenheit betrifft, so sollte man dem Beispiel des Sperlingsweibchens folgen, das seine Eier in den Wellen des Ozeans verlor. Ein Sperlingsweibchen hatte seine Eier an das Ufer des Ozeans gelegt, aber der große Ozean trug die Eier auf seinen Wellen davon. Der kleine Vogel war sehr aufgeregt und bat den Ozean, die Eier zurückzugeben. Der Ozean jedoch beachtete ihn nicht einmal. Darauf entschloß sich der Sperling, den Ozean zu leeren und auszutrocknen. Er begann, mit seinem kleinen Schnabel Wasser zu schöpfen, und jeder lachte über seine unmögliche Entschlossenheit. Die Nachricht von seinem Vorhaben verbreitete sich rasch, und schließlich hörte auch Garuḍa, der gigantische, gefiederte Träger Viṣṇus, davon. Er bekam Mitleid mit seiner kleinen Vogelschwester, und so kam er persönlich herbei. Als er die Entschlossenheit des kleinen Sperlings sah, war er sehr erfreut und versprach, ihm zu helfen. Garuḍa befahl dem Ozean, die Eier zurückzugeben, und drohte, andernfalls selbst die Arbeit des Sperlings zu übernehmen. Der Ozean erschrak sehr und gab die Eier sogleich zurück. So wurde der Sperling durch die Gnade Garuḍas zufrieden und glücklich.

Similarly, the practice of yoga, especially bhakti-yoga in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, may appear to be a very difficult job. But if anyone follows the principles with great determination, the Lord will surely help, for God helps those who help themselves.

In ähnlicher Weise mag das Praktizieren von yoga, besonders von bhakti-yoga im Kṛṣṇa-Bewußtsein, sehr schwierig erscheinen, doch wenn man den Prinzipien mit großer Entschlossenheit folgt, wird einem der Herr mit Sicherheit helfen, denn: Hilf dir selbst, so hilft dir Gott.
