भयाद्रणादुपरतं मंस्यन्ते त्वां महारथाः ।
येषां च त्वं बहुमतो भूत्वा यास्यसि लाघवम् ॥ ३५ ॥

maṁsyante tvāṁ mahā-rathāḥ
yeṣāṁ ca tvaṁ bahu-mato
bhūtvā yāsyasi lāghavam

bhayāt — out of fear; raṇāt — from the battlefield; uparatam — ceased; maṁsyante — they will consider; tvām — you; mahā-rathāḥ — the great generals; yeṣām — for whom; ca — also; tvam — you; bahu-mataḥ — in great estimation; bhūtvā — having been; yāsyasi — you will go; lāghavam — decreased in value.

bhayāt: par peur; raṇāt: le champ de bataille; uparatam: as quitté; maṁsyante: considéreront; tvām: tu; mahā-rathāḥ: les grands généraux; yeṣām: de ceux qui; ca: aussi; tvam: toi; bahu-mataḥ: en haute estime; bhūtvā: ayant été; yāsyasi: tu iras; lāghavam: déprécié.

Translation

Translation

The great generals who have highly esteemed your name and fame will think that you have left the battlefield out of fear only, and thus they will consider you insignificant.

Les grands généraux qui estimaient hautement ton nom et ta gloire croiront que la peur seule t’a fait quitter le champ de bataille et te déconsidéreront.

Purport

Lord Kṛṣṇa continued to give His verdict to Arjuna: “Do not think that the great generals like Duryodhana, Karṇa and other contemporaries will think that you have left the battlefield out of compassion for your brothers and grandfather. They will think that you have left out of fear for your life. And thus their high estimation of your personality will go to hell.”

Le Seigneur continue de donner Son point de vue à Arjuna: « Crois-tu que ces grands généraux, Duryodhana, Karṇa et les autres, croiront que tu abandonnes la lutte simplement par compassion pour tes frères et ton grand-père ? Ils penseront plutôt que c’est parce que tu as peur de mourir et ils perdront la haute estime qu’ils avaient pour toi. »
