आहारस्त्वपि सर्वस्य त्रिविधो भवति प्रिय: ।
यज्ञस्तपस्तथा दानं तेषां भेदमिमं श‍ृणु ॥ ७ ॥

Even the food each person prefers is of three kinds, according to the three modes of material nature. The same is true of sacrifices, austerities and charity. Now hear of the distinctions between them.

Zelfs het voedsel waaraan een persoon de voorkeur geeft, kan in drie soorten worden onderscheiden, overeenkomstig de drie hoedanigheden van de materiële natuur. Hetzelfde geldt voor het brengen van offers, het beoefenen van ascese en vrijgevigheid; hoor nu over het onderscheid tussen deze.

In terms of different situations in the modes of material nature, there are differences in the manner of eating and performing sacrifices, austerities and charities. They are not all conducted on the same level. Those who can understand analytically what kind of performances are in what modes of material nature are actually wise; those who consider all kinds of sacrifice or food or charity to be the same cannot discriminate, and they are foolish. There are missionary workers who advocate that one can do whatever he likes and attain perfection. But these foolish guides are not acting according to the direction of the scripture. They are manufacturing ways and misleading the people in general.

In verband met de verschillende situaties in de hoedanigheden van de materiële natuur zijn er verschillen in eetgewoonten, het verrichten van offers, ascese en vrijgevigheid. Deze vinden niet allemaal op hetzelfde niveau plaats. Zij die een onderscheid kunnen maken en die kunnen zien welke soort handeling in welke hoedanigheid van de materiële natuur wordt gedaan, zijn werkelijk wijs; zij die alle soorten van offers of voedsel of vrijgevigheid als hetzelfde zien, kunnen geen onderscheid maken en zijn dwaas. Er zijn religieuze personen die rondgaan en verkondigen dat men kan doen wat men wil en toch de volmaaktheid kan bereiken. Maar zulke dwaze leiders handelen niet volgens de aanwijzingen van de heilige teksten. Ze verzinnen hun eigen wegen en misleiden de mensen op die manier.
