Vertaling

When there is an increase in the mode of ignorance, O son of Kuru, darkness, inertia, madness and illusion are manifested.

Wanneer de hoedanigheid onwetendheid toeneemt, o zoon van Kuru, worden duisternis, passiviteit, waanzin en illusie zichtbaar.

Betekenisverklaring

When there is no illumination, knowledge is absent. One in the mode of ignorance does not work by a regulative principle; he wants to act whimsically, for no purpose. Even though he has the capacity to work, he makes no endeavor. This is called illusion. Although consciousness is going on, life is inactive. These are the symptoms of one in the mode of ignorance.

Waar verlichting afwezig is, is geen kennis. Iemand in de hoedanigheid onwetendheid is niet actief volgens een regulerend principe; hij wil alleen doen wat hij zelf wil, zonder bepaald doel. Ook al heeft hij het vermogen iets te doen, toch doet hij geen moeite. Dat wordt illusie genoemd. Hoewel bewustzijn aanwezig is, leidt hij een passief leven. Dat zijn de kenmerken van iemand in de hoedanigheid onwetendheid.
