Translation

Den legemliggjorte ånd, der er herre over sin krops by, hverken skaber handlinger, får folk til at handle eller skaber handlingens frugter. Alt dette iværksættes af den materielle naturs kvaliteter.

The embodied spirit, master of the city of his body, does not create activities, nor does he induce people to act, nor does he create the fruits of action. All this is enacted by the modes of material nature.

FORKLARING: Som det vil blive forklaret i kapitel 7, er det levende væsen en af den Højeste Herres energier eller naturer, men er forskellig fra materie, der er en anden af Herrens naturer og kaldes den lavere natur. På en eller anden måde har den højere natur, det levende væsen, i umindelige tider været i kontakt med den materielle natur. Den midlertidige krop eller materielle bolig, som han får, er årsag til forskellige handlinger og deres resulterende reaktioner. Når man lever i en sådan betinget atmosfære, lider man under resultaterne af kroppens handlinger ved (i uvidenhed) at identificere sig med kroppen. Det er denne uvidenhed, som man har tilegnet sig for umindelige tider siden, der er årsag til kropslig lidelse og elendighed. Så snart det levende væsen lægger afstand til kroppens handlinger, bliver han også fri for reaktionerne. Så længe man befinder sig i kroppens by, ser man ud til at være dens hersker, men i virkeligheden er man hverken dens ejer eller herre over dens handlinger og reaktioner. Man befinder sig blot midt i det materielle hav i kamp for tilværelsen. Havets bølger kaster én rundt, og man har ingen kontrol over dem. Den bedste løsning, som man har, er at komme ud af vandet ved hjælp af transcendental Kṛṣṇa-bevidsthed. Det er det eneste, der kan redde én fra al virvaret.

The living entity, as will be explained in the Seventh Chapter, is one of the energies or natures of the Supreme Lord but is distinct from matter, which is another nature – called inferior – of the Lord. Somehow the superior nature, the living entity, has been in contact with material nature since time immemorial. The temporary body or material dwelling place which he obtains is the cause of varieties of activities and their resultant reactions. Living in such a conditional atmosphere, one suffers the results of the activities of the body by identifying himself (in ignorance) with the body. It is ignorance acquired from time immemorial that is the cause of bodily suffering and distress. As soon as the living entity becomes aloof from the activities of the body, he becomes free from the reactions as well. As long as he is in the city of the body, he appears to be the master of it, but actually he is neither its proprietor nor controller of its actions and reactions. He is simply in the midst of the material ocean, struggling for existence. The waves of the ocean are tossing him, and he has no control over them. His best solution is to get out of the water by transcendental Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That alone will save him from all turmoil.
